Acid Peptic Disease in Siddha
Siddha is an alternative branch of medicines and science that originated in Tamil Nadu centuries ago. What sets Siddha apart from all other medicinal sciences is its approach to healing. Siddha believes that if there is an imbalance in the three humours that form the human body, i.e. Vata, pitta and Kapha, the person will come down with diseases. A shortage of excess of any one of the three humours can lead to particular diseases. Siddha’s goal is to uncover the reason behind the disease and then cure it.

In Siddha parlance, peptic diseases are called ‘Kunmam’ or ‘Gulmam’. They can be identified by the following symptoms -

• Frequent abdominal pain
• Heartburn
Acid reflux
• Regurgitation
Nausea
Loss of appetite
Bloating
Weight loss

Siddha classifies Acid Peptic Diseases into eight types -
• Vazhi kunmam
• Azhal kunmam
• Iya kunmam
• Mukkutra kunmam
• Vayu kunmam
• Eri kunmam
• Vanthi kunmam
• Vali kunmam

The classification was created on the basis of the symptoms that each type exhibits.

Siddha believes the acid peptic disease is the outcome of lifestyle choices. Some activities that can lead to it are -

• Consuming astringent and spicy foods
• Eating too many tubers
• Too much
• Anger
• Stress

These lifestyle decisions can cause a Vata imbalance, which prompts acid peptic diseases.

Treatment of Acid Peptic diseases through Siddha -

• Other medicines derived from herbs

Foods that are recommended for people with this disorder are -

Rice boiled twice
• Fresh and organic vegetables
• Coconut, black grams and horse grams
