Patella dislocation is mostly found among women and people associated with the high impact sport. It refers to a condition where the kneecap gets completely displaced from its normal location. Lateral dislocation is more common that involves the damage of ligaments and muscles. An immediate response to a patellar injury should be to cut down inflammation, stop engaging the patellofemoral joint and to relieve pain. One of the best ways to do it is to follow the RICE mechanism- rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Once this is done, one should seek urgent medical attention.

Symptoms of patellar dislocation:

  1. Immediate swelling of the knee area
  2. Extreme tenderness around the area of the knee cap
  3. Instability while bearing weight
  4. Acute pain near the knee cap area
  5. Quadriceps muscle weakness
  6. Redness to the affected area and instant fever as a result of the pain
  7. Warm feeling of the affected area

Immediate Treatment

If patella remains dislocated, consult to doctor immediately. To put the kneecap back in place, the doctor may give you pain medication to relax his or her knee muscles, and then gently apply pressure to move the kneecap back into place. This process is called a "reduction."

Nonsurgical Treatment

  • Immobilization. You may wear a brace for 4 to 6 weeks. This stabilizes the knee while it heals.

  • Weight-bearing. Because putting weight on the knee may cause pain and slow the healing process, you may require crutches for the first week or two after the injury.

  • Physical therapy. Once the knee has started to heal, you doctor will require physical therapy to help you to regain normal motion. Specific exercises will strengthen the thigh muscles holding the knee joint in place. Your commitment to the exercise program is important for a successful recovery. Typically, patient return to activity 3 to 6 weeks after the injury.

Because a dislocation often damages knee tissue, the patella often remains looser, or more unstable, than it was before the injury. As a result, the patella may dislocate again. Recurrences also are common if the dislocation was caused by an irregularity in the knee structure. Ongoing exercises, such as cycling, can strengthen quadriceps muscles in the thigh and prevent future patellar dislocations.

Surgical Treatment

If your patella dislocates multiple times, or continues to be unstable despite therapy and bracing, surgery may be recommended to correct the problem. The type of surgery will depend on the cause of unstable kneecap. Surgical treatments often involve reconstructing the ligaments that hold the patella in place.

Post-surgical knee rehabilitation is a key step to a full recovery from patellar dislocation. The process of rehabilitation not only rebuilds the muscles but negate the chances of future dislocation. It also focuses on strength, endurance, power and full motion of the knee. The balance and agility of the limb are also focused upon.

How to prevent patellar dislocation?
Since the risk of recurrence of a patella dislocation is 50 percent, prevention procedures should be at the top of the list.

  1. Refraining from high impact sports.
  2. Wearing a knee cap
  3. Continuing the daily exercise recommended by the physiotherapist to ensure non-recurrence of the patella dislocation.

Hi. Have you done any strengthening program after that. or Are you going to gym to strengthen knee muscles. Gym Rehab is important before starting to jog or Run. if you are going to gym try to concentrate on core muscles also along with strengthening. warm up and cool down is essential before and after jogging or running respectively.

Hi there This condition is known as genu valgum or knee knock. You can try physiotherapy treatment for this. Leg strengthening exercises would help and would advice knee orthotics to improve correct alignment of the knees. Consult your nearest physiotherapist.

Knee pain is characterized by a feeling of pain in the knee joint caused by injury or overuse. The knee joint consists of small bone structures, the kneecap, supporting ligaments and cartilage of the knee. This joint bears the full weight of the body, which makes it very vulnerable to injury.

Causes of knee pain

Knee pain is usually caused by injuries to the knee such as exposure to a direct force on the knee, abnormal twisting of the knee or falling on your knees. Some causes of knee pain are -

    the knee to become sore and painful
  • Kneecap dislocation - Injuries may cause the kneecap to shift out of its position, this causes swelling and pain in the knee joint

Severe knee pain can restrict movements such as walking or standing. The symptoms vary according to the extent of the damage suffered by the knee. Most common symptoms of knee pain are problems in climbing stairs, inability to extend the knees, limping and swelling of the knee joint. Knee deviation can be corrected thr surgery assp, for the flat foot modified foot wear and exercises to strengthen foot muscles.

My knee has dislocated twice however with a little push it get backs to its originality. However during dislocation lot of pain is incurred. I have been doing a normal jogging and knee strengthen exercises which has helped me. Is there a requirement to do MRI and check for any issues with knee.

First of all it is not a knee dislocation. It is a case patella dislocation. Treatment immediate after dislocation is rest n immobilise your limb n ice application. But you will get done mri of your knee joint for see for the mpfl injury .n you ll start this exercise like stat quadriceps exercise, hamstring exercise and vmo strengthning exercise.

Kneecap dislocation is a condition wherein the ligaments, responsible to bind the knee bones together, separate from each other. Although a very rare phenomenon in itself, knee dislocation can lead to permanent loss of mobility, if not taken care of immediately after diagnosis.

Causes
Knee dislocation can occur, if you have had recently survived any major accident such as a car crash or taken a fall from a high-storeyed building. A dislocated kneecap might cause significant numbness and severe pain below the knees. In some cases, the knee can get relocated on its own, which might cause the kneecaps to become swollen, numb and extremely painful to live with as time passes. The general structure of the leg might be significantly deformed due to a dislocated kneecap.

Treatments

The doctor can opt for a relocation of the lower leg to revert it to its former position.
b. To prevent future accidents, the doctor will recommend the use of an immobilizer to prevent the kneecaps from bending, and also to initiate the healing process.

Osgood Schaltter is a problem at the tibial tuberosity of the Shin bone.
