Inguinal Hernia is patency of the communication between the abdominal cavity and the scrotum in males and the labia in females. When this contains abdominal fluid only, it is called a hydrocele. When it contains intestinal loops, we call it hernia. In a baby or a small child, it is basically the same disease. The treatment is also the same, herniotomy. It is a painless procedure with excellent recovery, often done as a day care procedure. It can be done laparoscopy calls as well, wherein only 3 punctures are made in the abdominal wall. Inguinal hernias in babies should be operated upon as soon as possible because there is always a possibility of an intestinal loop getting into the hernial sac and failing to get back into the abdomen, resulting in strangulation, which is a life threatening condition.
