I am Dr. Aradhana Gupta, IVF Specialist. Today I will talk about infertility. Infertility can be the problem in male and female both. Surprisingly, 50% males are involved in the cases of infertility. To test the male, we do semen analysis. So, this is the first and foremost test we do. We see motility and morphology of the sperm. We test the patient to ensure that there is no infection or pus inside the sperm. If we see that there is azoospermia then we examine 2 samples. We take the detail history of the patient like if he has undergone with any surgery, trauma to private parts or having some infections in the childhood or genetic factors. We do scrotal and transrectal ultrasound. Diabetic patient can have semen problems.
Few males are unable to do the intercourse and ejaculate. This is another problem. They might require counseling. Another problem is aspermia. treatment can be done with IUI. If case is severe then we go for IVF and ICSI. What are the causes of male infertility? Environmental factors like pollution, stress, late night working hours. Few infections like in local parts or prostate problem.
Diabetes causes infection as it reduces immunity.. It also reduces the libido. We treat them with anti-oxidant medicines, healthy diet and lifestyle, good sleep. But if there is no improvement with lifestyle changes then we need to go for treatment. We take out the sperm from testis but in case if do not find good number of sperms then we go for microscopic sperm extraction. We inject the sperm in egg and make the embryo.
So, the take-home message is that husband and wife both should go for counselling and husband should go for the test first. Keep your lifestyle and diet healthy. If there is some severe problem then we do have various treatments and medications. If nothing is working then we can take the semen from the bank with same blood group and profile and we can make the embryo and make your family complete.
