HIFU or High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound is a new-age skin lifting, anti-ageing treatment, particularly for the neck and face. High-intensity ultrasound waves are focused on the dermal and deeper dermal layers of the skin. People above age 30 with loose sagging skin, wrinkles, double chin and jawlines are a good candidate for HIFU treatment.

How does HIFU technique work?

HIFU uses ultrasound energy on targeted skin layers below the surface. When the ultrasound waves pass through the skin, they generate heat, and the heat stimulates controlled tissue damage that further leads to the production of collagen. Due to the formation of new collagen, the previously loose skin becomes firmer and tighter. Since the heat energy is focused on the tissues beneath the skin, the upper layers of the skin and its adjacent tissues remain undamaged.

Step-by-Step Procedure

No special preparation is required before going for the HIFU procedure. Make sure you are not wearing any make-up prior to the treatment. The steps of the procedure are explained below –

• A dermatologist will first clean the targeted area
• To minimize discomfort and pain, you will be given a topical anaesthetic cream
• Ultrasound gel will be applied before placing the ultrasound device against the skin
• The specialist will adjust the device to the right setting with the help of an ultrasound viewer
• Short pulses of ultrasound energy are directed to the targeted area for about 30-90 minutes
• Once the procedure is over, the ultrasound device is removed

You might feel tingling and heat while the ultrasound energy is being applied. However, to ease these symptoms, pain medications can be provided.

Benefits of HIFU

The High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound technique has several aesthetic benefits, including the following –

• Wrinkle reduction
• Works well for double chin
• Skin tightening – the device works fine for sagging skin
• Face lifting – cheeks, eyelids and eyebrows, and neck
• Enhancing jawline definition
• Skin smoothening

Moreover, the procedure involves fewer risks and complications because of its non-invasive nature.

What to Expect After the Treatment?

The best part of HIFU technique is that the patient is able to get back to normal activities immediately after the procedure is done. Mild swelling or redness may occur, but that should subside soon.
The effects are observed within a month and usually last for about 8-12 months, depending on the patient’s lifestyle. Studies reveal that nearly 94% of people who went for HIFU technique experienced improved skin texture and appearance, which lasted for almost 6 months.

HIFU treatment is considered an effective and safe procedure for those who wish to improve their skin texture and eliminate signs of ageing and facial wrinkles. The ultrasound waves used in the technique stimulate collagen and production of elastin to give you a more youthful appearance. However, the procedure has its own limitations. It may not work well for those who have photo-damaged skin and severe skin laxity. It is best to take advice from a certified dermatologist before undergoing this treatment.
