FUE Hair Transplant - Treatment, Procedure And Side Effects

What is FUE transplant?

FUE which is also known as Follicular Unit Extraction and is a process of hair transplant. Hair from the thicker parts of your scalp or from any other body part is taken and grafted at the bald parts. This can also be called restoration of hair.

How does FUE hair transplant performed?

FUE is the transplantation of hair and in this extraction of hair follicles is done from the back of your scalp under the influence of local anesthesia and it also includes special kind of micro punch which is implanted in the area which is bald.

Graft extraction procedure:

It is basically a Two-step procedure in which graft can be extracted which are as follows:

  • Step 1: In the first step sharp punch is kept over the follicular unit after which alignment is done according to the direction of the hair shaft. But this must be done carefully and the punch should not be pushed deeper as it can damage roots and root transaction can take place.
  • Step 2: In the second step with the help of the forceps traction of the follicular unit is done gently and it is pulled loose from the subcutaneous connections and deeper dermal. This technique varies from one person to another.

Hair Transplantation Procedure:

  • Step 1: In the first step with the help of micro punches sharp side scoring of the scalp skin is done which also contains follicle unit.
  • Step 2: In this step punch is again introduced to the same area but with the dull side and it loosens up the follicle units by twisting them.
  • Step 3: In the third step graft is taken out gently by the assistance with the help of forceps. After extraction of the graft, it is then preserved in the saline or cool Ringer’s lactate solution.

How does FUE hair transplant work?

Most of the time it works for about 90 per cent but it takes about 3-4 month for the hair to grow completely. Hair transplant is most of the time successful.

Which is better FUE or FUT hair transplant?

Both FUE and FUT transplant is good and the best option for you will depend upon the need of the individual and the recommendation of the doctor also matters.

How many grafts can be transplanted in one session of FUE?

During the transplant, each unit of hair contains one to four hairs and one to four groups of hair is called follicle hair grafts which are transplanted in areas with no hair.

How long does it take to recover from an FUE procedure?

The time of recovery depends upon the FUE which is offered for the faster recovery. After the surgery, it is required for the patient to wear a bandage and take the medicine as prescribed by your doctor.

How long does it take to perform an FUE procedure?

The standard FUE procedure takes about 3-4 hours to complete and also depends upon the speed of the surgeon how much time he/she is taking.

Is FUE hair transplant permanent?

FUE hair transplant is permanent and it is considered to be the most effective way for restoring your hair.

What are the benefits of FUE hair transplant?

These are the benefits of FUE hair transplant:

Very less pain after the procedure: though the procedure of hair transplant involves small punches in your skin but after the completion of the procedure, there is no pain or minimal pain.

But the patient may remain uncomfortable for a few days and all the patients are given medicine after the procedure.

  • Invisible scars: during the procedure, small punches are made at the back of your head and these punches leave scars on your head which are hard to hide. But with time it scars are easily concealed even if you have a short hair cut.
  • Natural-looking hair: FUE hair transplant gives you natural-looking hair and hair-line. It also gives thicker hair thus making your hair look natural.
  • Less downtime: As there are no stitches and scalpels used the wounds just heal within a few days and does not take much time.
  • Less risk and complications: As there is less use of manual labour and robots are being used for the hair transplantation and it completely natural. Thus it involves very less risk and complication.

Are there any side effects?

There are no long-term side effects. The immediate side effects can include itching of the scalp and numbness in the treated area. There are minor chances of scarring in the regions where the hair follicles have been taken out.

But these conditions and symptoms are natural and will heal on its own. You can expect the full results of the treatment after a period of about six to eight months.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

You have to avoid taking a hair wash for two to three weeks. The doctor would prescribe the medications and the lotions that have to be applied post the treatment. Usually, this might be for a few months.

There are modifications needed in your diet and your lifestyle, and you can get back to your routine work after a rest period of 2 to 3 days. Initially, you might be asked to wear a surgical cap when you step outside to avoid exposure to dirt and dust.

How long does it take to recover?

The recovery period is very minimal, and you can carry on your normal duties without any hindrance. You might be asked to take rest for a few days initially and can be advised to refrain from doing heavy work.

The actual treatment results would be visible only after the period where the follicles take the roots and start regrowing. It might take a period of six to eight months for the hair follicles to take shape. Once the process sets your natural hair from the follicles will start growing.

What is the price of FUE hair transplant in India?

In India, the price of the treatment depends on the clinic where you are getting the treatment. Again, when choosing a clinic, choose a treatment center with reputation.

The average cost depends on the number of follicles transplanted. It might cost anywhere in the range of INR 2,00,000 to INR 3,00,000 in a reputed hair clinic. The medications and the post treatment care may be additional.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

Yes, the results of the treatment are permanent. However, it does not mean that you will not expect any hair loss in the places where the treatment has not been done. Your hair would continue to follow its pattern of its usual life cycle in the untreated areas.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

As an alternative to hair transplantation, you can opt for hair weaving or hair bonding where a synthetic artificial hair can be replaced and primed on your scalp.

This is more of a synthetic hair, and you can take it out at your will. The other alternatives could be the usage of drugs and medication for hair regrowth.
