Erectile dysfunction, commonly known as impotence, is a distressing and highly prevalent medical condition. It refers to one’s inability to achieve or maintain an erection firm enough for intercourse. ED not only affects the quality of one’s sexual life, but also has a much greater impact on men, affecting self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-image of poor masculinity.
Nevertheless, today, modern medical science has made it possible to restore erectile function and even cure the condition. In this respect, Shock Wave Therapy has shown promising results.

What is Shock Wave Therapy?
Shock Wave Therapy is a multidisciplinary device used it physiotherapy, orthopaedics, urology, veterinary, and sports medicine. This non-invasive treatment involves producing a series of low-intensity acoustic wave pulsations that are applied directly to the site of injury through the skin by means of a gel.

How does Shock Wave Therapy work to treat Erectile Dysfunction?

  • Shock Wave Therapy or Low-intensity Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (Li-ESWT) uses non-invasive, low-energy sound waves to pass through the erectile tissues. This helps restore natural erectile function by cleansing plaque out of the blood vessels and promoting the growth of new blood vessels. The therapy provides a cure in that it reverses the conditions responsible for the dysfunction.
  • Shock Wave Therapy used to treat erectile dysfunction is quite different from ESWL or Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy for treating kidney stones.
  • ESWL has a smaller focal volume. Moreover, the energy used remains concentrated to one point. ESWT, on the other hand, uses radical shock waves spread over a wider area. The energy used in Shock Therapy for ED is 10% of that used in the treatment of kidney stones.
  • Currently, Shock Wave Therapy is the only treatment on the horizon for erectile dysfunction that looks to offer a cure. The therapy has also been recommended to improve the efficacy of pill therapy in men, who do not respond well.
