Osteogenesis Imperfecta - How It Happens?

Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is a group of genetic disorders that primarily affect the bones, making them extremely weak. It is also known as ‘brittle bones disease’. This genetic disease is incurable and the treatment is primarily focused on pacifying the condition by reducing pain and strengthening the bones.

The symptoms of OI include, but are not limited to, recurring fractures, bluish tinge in the white of the eyes, hearing loss, breathing problems, short height, loose joints and dental problems. There is no definitive test for OI but doctors recommend certain scans and DNA testing before confirming their diagnosis.

What Causes Osteogenesis Imperfecta?
Osteogenesis Imperfecta is caused by genes that are not functioning properly. These genes can be inherited from one or both of the parents, although there have been cases in which neither parent gives the bad genes. These bad genes inhibit the production and functioning of collagen (the skin’s building block); a material found in bones and is responsible for making them strong. Low amounts of collagen lead to weakening of bones, which get fractured easily or sometimes without any reason at all.

Treatment of Osteogenesis Imperfecta
Osteogenesis Imperfecta is an incurable disease. The treatment for this disease focuses on reducing the pain and strengthening the bones of the patient so that he/she may lead a somewhat normal life. The treatment of OI depends on how severe it is. There are 8 types of Osteogenesis Imperfecta. Types 2, 3, 7 and 8 are considered severe while types 4, 5 and 6 are considered moderate. Type 1 is considered to be least severe. The treatment includes:

  • The drug ‘Bisphosphonate’ can be used to increase bone mass and reduce bone pain and fracture.
  • Surgery can be carried out to improve the bone structure. Surgery can also be used to insert metal rods in the long bones in order to strengthen them.
  • Physiotherapy can be used to increase bone and muscle strength and also to improve mobility.

Distraction- The Efficiency Killer At Work!

Nowadays, it is quite challenging to increase work efficiency by overall team performance due to increasing competitions. Hence, the use of modern technologies is helping tremendously to improve the productivity.  But at the same time, these advanced technologies have started creating hindrances in the overall productivity. It includes the internet and social media. They are the major culprit for killing work efficacy and distracting every working personnel. Amongst all these, smartphones are at topmost level comparing to other technologies. However, these are not the only cause of distractions.

What could be the exact cause of the distractions?

According to recent surveys, the biggest efficiency killers in the workplace are as follows:

  1. Noisy atmosphere
  2. Seating in the closed rooms
  3. Gossiping with the colleagues
  4. Being excessively active on social media
  5. Frequent meetings
  6. Taking a frequent break for snacks, or for smoking

All these activities tend to distract people at workplace, making them inattentive, and least productive. These distractions have significant consequences as it affects the quality of work and hampers the relationship with the boss and the subordinates. The great productivity comes from proper focus on one task at a time until it gets completed. The use of all these gadgets during work hour is increasing day by day. Notifications from these programs used to keep in touch with people are the biggest distracting measures.

In some organizations, the distraction is avoided by removing all the barriers, such as blocking social websites, banning personal calls, and cell phone use, monitoring emails and internet use, limiting meetings, providing open space etc.

How to improve work efficiency?

Close all these communication channels. It will definitely help to concentrate on the work. Receiving notifications in between work, breaks the chain of thoughts, and takes more time to complete the work. Try to gather all the information before starting the work. Put smartphone either on silent mode, or vibration mode, and stay away from all such distractions.

Schedule a break with definite starting and ending time. This will serve dual purpose, in making one feel relaxed and feeling refreshed to start the work again with the same enthusiasm. Be in the company of productive people. Get inspired by observing how other co-workers are improving their productivity.

Take a walk in case of difficulty to concentrate. Researchers have shown that taking a walk for 15-20 min improves brain function, provides refreshment and renewed energy.

Stay away from the noisy environment. The good remedy to avoid noise is using headphones and listening to soothing music. Stay away from any kind of gossip, or unnecessary discussions as they divert the mind from the main focus.

Conclusion

Being focused is equally important to improve the work efficiency, to improve the productivity, and to maintain the relationship with the organization. Distraction will never help to flourish and will create many obstacles in the path of success.

Concentration
Want to improve your Concentration?

1. Cut out the noise. Noise is a distraction and interrupts our thinking. It makes it harder for us to focus, to process, retrieve and then use information.

2. Structure your environment. Try and set aside a specific place to study - somewhere that is quiet, and free from normal, everyday distractions.

3. Know what you’re aiming for. You won’t achieve much without clear objectives. You need to have a concrete and specific goal. That is, something you can measure and can work towards.

4. Plan your studying for the day. Tick off your achievements as you work through your list. That will help to keep you focused, so you’re less inclined to daydream - or to waste time doing futile, pointless things.

5. Know what the guidelines and the standards are. Then, adhere closely to those when doing you’re doing practice tests, or writing an assignment, or thinking through your answers.

6. Expect to meet roadblocks. That way, obstacles won’t throw you off your course. You’ll get up and work around them – so they don’t destroy your plans.

7. Become a hermit and isolate yourself. It’s just for a short time, and it’s worth it in the end.

8. Be patient, and hang in there, when you feel unmotivated. If you can just push through this, you will find that you learn something.

Tips For Improving Focus & Concentration- For Children & Adults

ADHD, CDD, short-term memory loss, forgetfulness, insomnia and so many more terminologies we would have come across very often. They all seem to have evolved from a common origin and that is concentration issues. Have you pondered on these questions!! Why can’t it be easy to concentrate? Why can’t it be easy to remember everything?

If yes, then read on to know more. Concentrate! Focus! Pay attention! These are not just words but one huge and complicated process in itself. Many children and as well as adults often develop this issue wherein they find extremely difficult to concentrate.

Factors influencing concentration: Concentration is a skill that requires you to prioritize your senses while doing any work. It is an ability to block out distractions. Other factors that influence concentration may include:

  1. Dedication/ Interest in the task
  2. Interest One’s ability to complete the task
  3. Physical and emotional state
  4. Conducive environment with few distractions.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and concentration deficit disorder (CDD)

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and concentration deficit disorder (CDD) are the two predominant concentration issues. The first one is more common among the children while the latter is observed in mostly the adults. Any individual with ADHD or CDD may show abnormalities in their behavior and social life. ADHD individuals tend to be forgetful and face problems sticking to one task and may even display excessive fidgeting. CDD individuals tend to be lethargic, move slowly and have trouble in staying alert. Adults may become socially withdrawn and exhibit slow information processing.

Solutions for concentration issues: Concentration issues require a lot of time to be overcome. You can try to figure out what causes the distractions and avoid them as much as possible by refocusing your mind only on what you are doing. You can give yourself timers which comprise of “distraction time” and “focus time”. This strategy helps if one’s mind is actively processing other things. You may also create subtasks by listing the things you need to do and then ruling out one by one once you accomplish them. Always breathe better and try for long inhalation and exhalation. This helps to bring down your anxiety levels which hinder the concentration. Though the above-mentioned strategies are just to help you improve your concentration they are not the ultimate cure for all of the issues. Every individual is unique and sometimes accepting oneself can solve many complications as it reduces the need for unnecessary thinking. Always create positive thoughts in your mind as it will act as a driving source.  In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Concentrate! Focus! Pay attention! These are not just words but one huge and complicated process in itself. Many children and as well as adults often develop this issue wherein they find extremely difficult to concentrate.

Science behind concentration issues: When an individual performs a single task; for example reading a book, the image of what he is seeing hits the retina. From the retina, the nerve fibres carry the image to the brain which stimulates the brain cells to fire an action potential. The signal from here moves to the thalamus and proceeds to the visual cortex. This signal activates locus coeruleus which is a brain stimulant. It targets the particular area of the brain becoming the deciding factor as to how one responds to a stimulus, which in this case is an image. When there is deregulation of the locus coeruleus, it is then that a person develops disorders like ADHA, anxiety, depression, insomnia and others.

5 Ways to Effectively Manage Your Time!

5 Ways to Effectively Manage Your Time!

Being able to manage your time efficiently either at work or school is crucial to getting work done on time. Chances are, you’ve come across a time management article at least once in the past. Throughout your day, your time is constantly being taken up by something. You can tentatively split your time between three aspects: thoughts, conversations and actions. Regardless of what line of work you are in, these three things will take up most of your time. Distractions can also come in the form of any of these three. It is not practical to think you can get rid of these distractions, but you can decide how much time you give to each one. In order to successfully manage your time, here are a few things you can try:

1. Create a daily plan:

Before you start your day, make a list of all the things you wish to accomplish throughout the day. Create a precise plan for what you want to do and when you want to do it. Set time limits to each task and stick to it. When you say you want to give a certain task 30 minutes, give it only 30 minutes and move on to the next. Sticking to timings will help you complete more items on your plan.

2. Know the deadlines:

Mark when your work is due in your calendar and create your schedule accordingly. For example, if you know your project is due at the beginning of next week, don’t wait till the day before to finish it. Start doing it the day you receive it. Finish of a little part of the project each day. This way you won’t have to worry about it being incomplete and you can work on other things in the day too.

3. Learn to say No:

Learn to say no when you already have too much on your plate. It’s okay to tell people that you simply do not have the time to do it, rather than saying okay and not getting it done. It is also important to say no to distractions. If you feel it is taking time away from your work, defer it to a later time. Complete what you need to for the time being and look at the distraction another time.

4. Prioritize:

When creating a task list make sure you prioritize too. Put tasks in order of when they have to be done and how much of a priority it is. Make sure you leave yourself enough time to go over your work and make any changes if necessary.

5. Remember it is impossible to get everything done:

It is important to remember that it is not always possible to finish everything on your task list. Sometimes you may finish 6 out of 10 and other times you may finish all 10. Do not get discouraged when you are not able to finish everything. Simply make sure the more urgent tasks are done and try to find time to finish the rest the next day.
