What is the Difficulty Concentrating?

Difficulty in concentration is a normal occurrence among children and adults alike. It is a very common problem that can have multiple causes ranging from psychological to hormonal to environmental factors. Psychological causes include attention disorders, depression, bereavement, anxiety and mood disorders. Attention disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is most associated disorder for difficulty in concentration. It leaves one unproductive in work, school or home. Anxiety disorder is characterized by excessive, persistent and unrealistic worrying that lead to muscle tensions, fatigue and irritability. Medical causes include hormonal, thyroid issues and low red blood cell count. Environmental factors like stress, over stimulating environment and lack of sleep can also lead to concentration problems. Sleep deprivation is one of the most common causes for lack of concentration. Ideally a person should sleep for a minimum of 7 hours. Inability to do so leads to fatigue, tiredness and headaches at the workplace and school. However, if you suffer from insomnia then you will have trouble falling asleep and subsequently suffer from lack of concentration.

Other causes influencing a person’s concentration level consist of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and normal aging problems where lack of concentration and forgetfulness can be seen. Therefore, people having trouble concentrating may be affected by one of these factors or causes or a combination of them.

How is the Difficulty Concentrating treatment done?

It is difficult to diagnose lack of concentration as it is a very common problem faced by every individual at one point of their life or the other. Therefore, it does not require regular check-ups by a doctor. However, if you have attention deficit hypersensitivity disorder (ADHD) and other medical conditions like depression and insomnia, then it is better to go to a doctor. Treatments may also include behavioral therapy and anti-psychotic drugs or medicines to treat your depression and anxiety issues.

Most often following certain measures helps in better level of concentration at work or school. These measures include avoiding distractions like loud music or the television when you are trying to concentrate, remove any distractions like your cellphone or tabs to concentrate on the task at hand, use a planner and make a checklists of things you have done and things you are required to do, get a good night’s sleep because a good sleep leads to better level of concentration, divide your tasks into smaller steps, take regular breaks to prevent feeling tired, try to limit your caffeine and alcohol intake as it leads to overstimulation of the brain and makes one feel restless and distractible.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

Most cases of difficulty in concentration does not require any medical interventions and treatment. However, in case where a person has attention deficit hypersensitivity disorder (ADHD), then you may require medicinal treatments. However, if you experience symptoms like memory loss, difficulty sleeping and unusual feelings of tiredness, then you should go to a doctor to get yourself checked out.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

A person suffering from mental disorders like dementia or memory loss displaying lack of concentration in their work is not eligible for the treatment of difficulty in concentration.

Are there any side effects?

There is no definite treatment for difficulty in concentration. It usually involves making certain lifestyle changes and eliminating any item that is triggering concentration problems. Therefore, difficulty in concentration treatment has no side effects. However, lack of concentration can affect your performance at school and office that might lead to serious repercussions.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

As there are no definite treatment for difficulty in concentration, it also does not have any post-treatment guidelines. However, you can help yourself by eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly. Not does diet play an important role in the overall functioning of your brain and body but including certain food items that are termed as brain food will help in your cognitive functions. These brain foods include blueberries, green tea, avocado, leafy green vegetables, fatty fish, water, dark chocolate, flax seeds and nuts. A diet rich in omega and vitamin B 12 will give you a boost of energy.

How long does it take to recover?

There is no definite recovery period becuase there is no treatment for difficulty in concentration and the problem keeps on recurring among people.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

No, the results of the treatment for difficulty in concentration is not permanent as the condition keeps reoccurring. We live in an age where we are surrounded by technological distractions. Therefore, we encounter problems of concentration on a daily basis.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

Difficulty in concentration does not have any proper alternative treatment. However, you can try these measures like giving your brain a workout by solving puzzles and doing crosswords and soduko helps increase our analytical side. Hanging out with your friends and leading a stress free life may improve your concentration level.

You can also practice yoga and do regular meditation to keep yourself calm and stress free. It is not only physically beneficial but also helps you mentally to remain focused and concentrated.
