Diabetes is a disease that is caused by elevated Glucose levels in the human body. In Diabetes, the cells in our body lose the ability to acquire Glucose from the blood. This causes a high accumulation of Glucose in the blood while the cells slowly starve.

Diabetes is one of the commonest diseases in the world. More than 300 million people in the world are suffering from diabetes.

Though there are conventional approaches in treating Diabetes, like Artificial Insulin and Homeopathy, in this article we will discuss controlling Diabetes through Acupuncture.

There are many kinds of Diabetes. The common types are:

● Type-I Diabetes: This type of Diabetes occurs when the β-cells in the Pancreas are damaged. This results in lack of Insulin in the body, and when there’s a lack of Insulin in the body, the cells lose their ability to acquire glucose from blood. This requires a patient to acquire Insulin Artificially.
● Type-2 Diabetes: Type 2 diabetes isn’t as bad as type-I; it usually occurs due to obesity and Hyperglycemia. Doctors recommend that patients should keep their lifestyle in check before they jump into taking Insulin. Type-2 Diabetes can become Type-I if not controlled.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese healing method that uses long sterilized needles to stimulate different spots in the body in order to restore Hormonal, Neural and Cardiovascular balance in the body.

Acupuncture’s role in Diabetes:

Treatment for Diabetes has always been a challenge for medical community. The lack of breakthroughs led people to lean towards alternative approaches like Acupuncture. Several researches were conducted to find the effect of Acupuncture on a patient suffering from Diabetes. Let’s look at some of these studies:

● A research by Szczudlik involved patients suffering from Diabetes to get Acupuncture treatment. As soon as the Acupuncture process started, the scientist noticed a significant drop in Insulin 5 minutes after the procedure. However, when the scientist examined the Insulin level after 40 minutes, there was a significant increase of Insulin level in the body.
● An Electro-Acupuncture method was also tried on a group of obese women. The study revealed that there was an increase of C-peptide from Proinsulin. This was responsible for the production of Insulin from the Pancreas.
● Acupuncture also showed increase in Beta-endorphins when Electro-Acupuncture was tested on rats. It also showed improvement in Insulin production and decrease of Glycemia.
Conclusion

Though studies reveal that Acupuncture can be an effective alternative method in treatment of Diabetes, it is important to remember that it isn’t a cure. Diabetes isn’t a curable disease as of now. Modern medicine along with holistic approaches like Acupuncture help patients in managing and controlling the disease.

A seasoned Acupuncture expert can help patients manage the level of Glucose in their body to lower down the risks involved with Diabetes.
