About 40% of couples facing fertility issues are known to have male factor responsible for it. Amongst various causes, diabetes has emerged as one of the leading cause of male infertility. Longer the duration of diabetes, worse is the effect. It is known to affect sperm count as well as motility, leading to oligoasthenospermia. It also causes abnormal morphology of sperms, causing fertilization difficulties in couples undergoing assisted techniques. It is advisable to consult physician/ diabetologist and follow their advice. The strict control of blood sugars is recommended before planning pregnancy. It may also increase the risk of miscarriage if pregnancy happens. Exercise and diet help extensively in these cases as it does for any patient of diabetes.
