Experiencing menstrual cramps for a few days every month is quite common for every woman. These cramps are commonly accompanied with pain. Menstrual cramps are referred to as dysmenorrhea. This is not a very serious health condition, but still the cramps can cause you pain and distress. You can manage the pain caused by menstrual cramps by making some simple changes and starting some practices. They are as follows:

  1. Dietary Changes: You have to make several dietary modifications to manage menstrual cramps. Reduce fat from your daily diet and consume more vegetables. A low-fat diet helps in reducing the levels of inflammation in your body. These changes will successfully help you to reduce the severity of menstrual cramps. You have to adopt a well-balanced diet.

  2. Medicines: Several painkillers which fall under the non-steroidal and anti-inflammatory groups are prescribed to relieve pain caused by the cramps. These medicines lower the production of prostaglandin that causes menstrual cramps. Inflammation and pain are relieved.

  3. Consume Green Tea: There are certain green teas, which relieve menstrual cramps. Herbal tea has been used since medieval ages for this purpose. Cramp bark is an effective tea used for this reason. Peppermint oil tea is also considered good.

  4. Fish Oil Supplements and Vitamin B1: Fish oil supplements and vitamin B1 help in naturally treating menstrual cramps. You will get quick and long-lasting relief by consuming these.

  5. Acupuncture: Acupuncture can be utilised to treat menstrual cramps. The nervous system gets relaxed, which increases the flow of blood to the internal body organs. Acupuncture assures effective pain relief.

  6. Massage Therapy: You can undergo massage therapy using certain essential oils. This provides great pain relief and is beneficial for menstrual cramps.

  7. Heating Pads: Heating pads provide efficient relief to menstrual cramps. Topically applied heat is also considered to be effective and pain relief is obtained in a short period of time.

A menstrual cramp is something which every woman complains of for a day or two every month. Menstrual cramps are usually the pains felt in the lower abdomen which can occur both before and during a woman's menstrual period. These cramps are caused by a hormone called prostaglandin that causes the uterine muscles to contract during menstruation. When the uterus contracts to shed its natural lining during your period it releases a hormone called prostaglandins which causes pain and inflammation. So higher the level of prostaglandins more severe the menstrual cramps.

It might be just a minor discomfort for some, but for others it can be severe. The symptoms of menstrual cramps include pain in the abdomen, pressure in the abdomen and pain in the hips, lower back, and inner thighs as well. However, if the cramps are severe you might have an upset stomach, loose stools and vomiting too.

Three out of four women experience menstrual pains and every one out of 10 women experiences severe cramps. Here are few remedies that might help in relieving the pain:

  1. Exercise, brisk walking or any type of physical activity can help to ease your belly pain as by being physically active your body pumps more blood, which helps to release endorphins to counteract the prostaglandins and reduce your cramps.
  2. Apply heat on the lower abdomen or the area where you feel the pain as it helps to relax the contracting muscles in your uterus.
  3. Improve your diet by reducing fat and increasing vegetables. However, avoid foods that contain caffeine and salt.
  4. Take a warm bath as it may also provide some relief.
  5. Add ginger in your food as it helps in lowering the levels of the pain-causing prostaglandins.
  6. Drink chamomile tea at least three times a day.
  7. Take fish oil supplements, vitamin B1 or both.
  8. Make sure to get enough vitamin D.
  9. Have an orgasm as it releases endorphins which has a pain-relieving effect and helps in boosting your mood as well.
  10. Include more dietary magnesium such as dry almonds and boiled spinach as it helps to ease the pain of cramps.
  11. Acupuncture also has an anti-inflammatory effect.
  12. Take a safe painkiller to reduce pain.
  13. Birth control pills may help relieve painful cramps, but they do come with side effects which may include spotting, breast tenderness, nausea and low sex drive.
  14. Refrain yourself from smoking and drinking alcohol.
  15. Finally, have appropriate rest.

Note that the medications for such cramps are to be taken after consulting a Gynecologist.

Menstrual cramps, also known as dysmenorrhea or period pains are throbbing or cramping pains in the lower abdomen.Many women experience menstrual cramps just before and during their menstrual periods.

Who gets menstrual cramps?
About half of women experience menstrual cramps and about 15% describe the pain as severe. It has been shown that women who do not exercise experience more painful menstrual cramps. Certain psychological factors such as emotional stress may also increase the likelihood of having uncomfortable menstrual cramps. Additional risk factors for these cramps include:

  1. Being younger than 20 years of age
  2. Starting puberty at age 11 or younger
  3. Menorrhagia - heavy bleeding during periods
  4. Never given birth

Hi. I have a 31-32 day cycle. My last period was on 28th April. Ovulation was around 10th-13th May (that was when we had unprotected intercourse). I had light cramping around 19th to 20th May and a little breast soreness. We had been on a 5 hour trip for 2 days (26th-27th May). I had heavy bleeding and cramping starting 27th noon with a few blood clots, which is continuing today, but with a lesser pace. I had not checked for a pregnancy test, as my next period is due on 29th May. Had I been pregnant? Should I be worried about a miscarriage? Does travelling cause miscarriage?

It might be due to less salt in the blood that might be the reason for you to have cramps during the sleep. Anaemia always leads to the symptoms of being tired and also having leg pain though there are no issues with the knee joint or back pain. Anaemia always leads to the symptoms of being tired and also having back / leg pain though there may not be any pathologicalreasons for back pain. If you have leg pain then you have to rule out the casues for having leg pain. Firstf all check your weight and your haemoglobin levels, as Anaemia always leads to the symptoms of being tired and also having leg pain though there are no issues with the knee joint or back pain.

I had cramps a week before period, it was for 3 days. After that I had mild cramps with white discharge, no foul smelling or other problems. Is this implantation cramps. I had sex on fertile days.

Not really as week before period you will not have any fluid discharge and also abdominal cramp might be due to menstrual cycles however this abdominal cramp is quite common. White discharge is due to weakness and also it is fine to have sex on those fertile days. Eat good iron content food which will help to reduce with the white fluid secretion Please ask relevant questions as we are physiotherapist.
