Chancroid: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

Last Updated: Apr 20, 2024

What is the treatment?

Chancroid is also termed as genital herpes or chlamydia.

How is the treatment done?

Chancroid is basically a bacterial infection caused by Haemophilus ducreyi that results in genital ulceration or open sores around the sexual or genital part of both the women and the men. This disease is entirely subject to sexual transmission, a person who is sexually active is likely more vulnerable to get affected by chancroid. The frequency of chancroid is more in developing countries whereas countries like the United States rarely experience Chancroid. The bacteria behind the cause directly attacks the tissue situated at the genital part of the person and finally results in serious open sores.

The part being affected may bleed or even create a fluid in that specific region. This fluid is extremely communicable and can spread during occasions of oral, anal and vaginal intercourse. In this way, the person to come in the physical connection may get affected and catch the disease. A person who is travelling and not getting exposed to enough healthcare, shelter, water and food items are at more risk. On the other hand, some other factors that influence the growth of the chancroid are poverty, drug and alcoholic person, multiple sexual partners, sex workers or anything that is directly associated with high rate of sexual practice.

In case of males, common symptoms involve birth of small red bump in the genitals that automatically gives rise to open sore within 2 to 3 days. The ulcers can be painful.

For women, red bumps will appear around the labia part, on the thighs and even in the space between the labia and the anus. The bumps on getting ulcerated are extremely painful and the person may experience a burning feeling while urination.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

In case of suffering from any symptoms that indicate the growth of chancroid, immediately rush to the doctor. Avoiding such symptoms may aggravate the condition and lead to a severe condition.

In some cases, symptoms may vary. The ulcer may also have a soft-centred area which is grey or yellowish grey colour. It may also have sharp edges. The ulcer starts bleeding no soon it is touched. Even swollen lymph nodes may break through the skin.

The doctor will primarily ask for a detailed information regarding your medical history and may also conduct a physical test. Further, he may ask you to undergo a test in which sample fluid that drains would be collected and analysed.

On being diagnosed, the doctor would try to cure the infection through medicines. Medicines to kill the bacterial growth is prescribed. These medicines are basically antibiotics.

If the situation gets worse, the doctor will suggest you for a surgery. The doctor is supposed to perform a surgery where he can drain the painful abscess. This will eventually reduce the swelling and the pain.
