Hi,

I am Dr. Rachna Singh, Obstetrics & Gynaecology. Today I will be speaking about breast cancer. Its screening, awareness, facts and myth behind it. The basic reason is why we worried about breast cancer is, it has moved on from being a no. 2, 3 cancer to no.1 cancer in India. The age group has also become in lower age group. Now we are seeing an aggressive form of breast cancer in younger age group. So, why do we worry so much? They don't get detected early. And then the survival rates reduce. Screening program and management is essential. So, be very aware of the risk of breast cancer. It could be obesity.

It could be exposed to x-ray in childhood or maybe a family history. Or a very prolonged intake of hormonal replacement therapy. Less than 40 years of age ultrasound is a good modality. But more than 40 years of age, the mammogram is required. Certain facts need to be very clear. Breast cancer is not caused by exposure to sunlight. The facts and myths need to be separated. Every lump in the breast is not cancerous. The investigation is required to detect the problem. Screening mammo is required. The survival rate of breast cancer depends on its early detection. We are losing a lot more woman because of aggressive cancer at a much earlier age. So, this can be taken care of. Awareness should be spread and then the willingness to get screened.
