What is the Bleeding Gums Treatment?

Bleeding gums is a condition that occurs due to gum disease. Bleeding gums can also be evident while brushing the teeth in a too harsh manner or wearing poorly fitted dentures. Unchecked gum bleeding gum can be to a few very serious conditions like periodontitis, leukemia, vitamin deficiency and less number of platelets. Periodontitis also known as gingivitis in gums occurs due to accumulation of plaque in the gaps of teeth and gums. Development of plaque can lead to cause dental caries or cavities. Thorough brushing of teeth is usually helpful in getting rid of plaque. But if it is too hard and is too stubborn to come out with just brushing the teeth, the plaque develops in to calculus or tartar. Hardened tartar increases bleeding of the gums. Signs and symptoms of gingivitis are swollen and bleeding gums along with soreness all around the gums. Deficiency of certain vitamins in the body like lack of vitamin C and K can cause bleeding gums. It is important that for treating bleeding gums food rich in vitamin C and K are consumed. Bleeding gums can also occur during pregnancy making the gums very sensitive. Bleeding gum treatment includes maintaining good dental hygiene.

How is the Bleeding Gums Treatment done?

The first and foremost treatment of bleeding gums is to remove plaque from the teeth and gums. The plaque is home to a number of bacteria. The plaque turned tartar is very hard and sticks stubbornly to the teeth and gums. Maintenance of good dental hygiene is very important to get rid of plaque in its early stages. Once it gets developed into tartar, removal requires root planning and scaling of teeth. Dental surgery may also be required to check gum disease. The methods of stopping bleeding gums would require you to visit the dentist at regular intervals for dental check-up, using a soft toothbrush, brushing teeth properly at least two times a day for two minutes. You must also try to brush your teeth after every meal so that every bit of food is washed out each time food is chewed. Not just brushing but proper flossing must also be done to flush out impurities from the mouth. Bleeding can controlled by using cold compress on the bleeding area. Rinsing mouth with saline water and hydrogen peroxide also helps clean the mouth thoroughly. Mouthwashes containing alcohol must be avoided to prevent drying up of mouth. Development of plaque can also be prevented by avoiding smoking as smoking worsens bleeding gums. Dentists may recommend you to use ‘water pick’ an oral irrigation device that helps in cleaning the mouth of any debris. If there are dentures, they must fit appropriately so that they do not harm the gums.
