Haemoglobin - Know Diet That Can Enhance It!

Haemoglobin - Know Diet That Can Enhance It!

Haemoglobin is a protein rich in iron and is found in red blood cells. The main function of haemoglobin is to carry oxygen throughout the body. In other words, it carries oxygen from the lungs to the other parts of the body so that the cells can carry on with their basic functions. It also carries carbon dioxide back to the lungs from those cells so that this gas can be exhaled.

Haemoglobin is important for maintaining a healthy life. The normal levels of haemoglobin in human body include:
• 14-18g/dl for adult men
• 12-16g/dl for adult women

Foods that improve haemoglobin

  1. Consume iron-rich food products: According to National Anaemia Action Council, lack of iron is the most common cause behind low haemoglobin levels. To improve iron content in your blood, you can take asparagus, tofu, almonds, oysters, fortified breakfast cereals, liver, red meat, shrimp, spinach, dates and lentils. However, consult your doctor for the right intake, as too much consumption of iron may be harmful for your health.
  2. Improve your vitamin C intake: Absorption of iron is improved if vitamin C is taken in adequate quantities. Lemon, tomatoes, papaya, oranges, strawberries, bell peppers, broccoli, grapefruit, etc. are some of the fruits that are rich in vitamin C. In fact, if there is a deficiency of vitamin C in our blood, haemoglobin levels go down. You may also take vitamin supplements to improve haemoglobin in your body, but consult a doctor first.
  3. Focus on food items rich in folic acid: This acid is basically vitamin B complex, which is required to make red blood cells. Food products that are rich in folic acid include rice, liver, breakfast cereals, sprouts, dried beans, wheat germ, peanuts etc. A diet comprising 200-400 milligrams of foliates is enough to supplement your Vitamin B needs.
  4. Include beetroot as a part of your diet: Rich in iron, folic acid, fibres and potassium, beetroot helps in augmenting haemoglobin levels. Drinking beetroot juice daily increases the iron content in your red blood cells.
  5. Have apples: They are rich in iron and if you have an apple daily, then your haemoglobin level will improve significantly. If possible, take a green apple with its skin. Apple juice mixed with beetroot juice has a marked effect on haemoglobin levels. You can also add some ginger or lemon juice to this mixture and have the concoction twice a day.
  6. Eat blackstrap molasses: This food is rich in iron, vitamin, folic acid etc. and improves the haemoglobin level in your blood. Take 2 tablespoons of blackstrap molasses and apple cider vinegar each, mix them in a cup of water and drink this concoction once a day.

Tips To Improve Your Hemoglobin Level!

Tips To Improve Your Hemoglobin Level!

Hemoglobin is a protein which transports oxygen to every cell of the body. It is formed by globulin chain molecules, wherein adults have two alpha-globulin chains and two beta-globulin chains and infants or babies have two alpha chains and two gamma chains. The gamma globulin chains transform into beta chains as the development in the baby occurs.

How can you improve your hemoglobin level?
Following are the most effective measures to improve hemoglobin level:

  1. Iron is necessary for hemoglobin production and red cell production. Thereby, intake of food which contains iron in excess amount needs to be taken, such as shellfish, beef, broccoli, tofu, spinach, green beans, cabbage, dates, beetroot, almonds, oysters,  asparagus etc.
  2. Folate is also very important for hemoglobin production. It produces heme portion of RBC’s. Thereby, the intake of foods which are a rich source of folate should be incorporated, such as beef, spinach, black-eyed peas, avocado, lettuce, rice, kidney beans, peanuts etc.
  3. Intake of vitamin C should be increased in cases of vitamin C deficiency as it helps in iron absorption from the stomach. Foods which are rich in vitamin C like papaya, oranges, lemon, strawberries, bell peppers, broccoli, grapefruit, tomatoes, and spinach should be included in your diet. Also, you can take vitamin C supplements as per your doctor’s advice.
  4. Regular intake of some fruits in the diet will also help you to increase the hemoglobin. Foods such as pomegranate, apple, watermelon will help in to improve hemoglobin count as they are a rich source of iron.
  5. Doing regular exercise will also help to improve hemoglobin and red blood cell counts. While exercising your body needs more amount of oxygen, and in order to compensate that body increases the production of red blood cells.
  6. Do not take calcium supplements along with iron supplements as calcium hampers absorption of the iron, and also avoid taking calcium-rich food.
  7. All types of Legumes are best to plant foods, enriched with iron. Legumes, such as soy nuts, red kidney beans, chickpeas, black-eyed peas, black beans, lentils, fava beans should be incorporated in the diet.
  8. Avoid intake of drinks which blocks iron absorption, and slow down its absorption like tea, coffee, cola drinks, wine, and beer. Excessive intake of all these drinks ultimately leads to low hemoglobin level.
  9. Drink nettle tea. Nettle is a herb which is a good source of iron, vitamin C and helps in raising hemoglobin level.
  10. Eat pumpkin seeds daily as their intake not only improves iron production, but also provides omega-3 fatty acids, and zinc.
  11. Increase the intake of iron-rich foods during, and after a menstrual period as a large amount of iron is lost during menstruation.
  12. Regular intake of iron and folate supplements only in deficient cases is the best way to improve your hemoglobin level. But it should be taken under doctor’s advice.

Fatty Degeneration Of Liver!

Fatty Degeneration Of Liver!

The liver is the second largest organ in the body. It’s responsible for many functions in the body including filtering harmful substances from the blood.
One of the most common changes to the liver is fatty liver disease that is multiple deposits of fats (triglycerides) in the liver cells.
Ayurveda describes the liver as a hot, fiery organ. As a vital organ, the liver is no less important than the heart.
Most problems can be detected early through liver disease symptoms such as abdominal pain beneath the ribs on the right side, nausea, vomiting, weakness, jaundice — yellowish skin and eyes, loss of appetite, and abnormal stools.
With appropriate diet and lifestyle changes, you can encourage liver rejuvenation and reduce the chances of falling prey to dangerous liver conditions.

Lifestyle & diet to prevent liver disease-

1. Liver-cleansing foods-

One should follow a pitta-pacifying diet and increase the amount of vegetables and fruits, introduce high-fiber plants such as whole grains and legumes to diet.
Food for healthy and clean liver-

It would be a good idea to bulk up your meals with fresh fruits and vegetables like grapefruits, blueberries, cranberries, grapes, beetroots, cruciferous vegetables, and leafy green vegetables. They help to minimize any risk of liver damage. Olive oil, turmeric, and green tea would also make for healthy additions.

2. Foods to avoid
Certain foods need to be restricted like-

  • Intake of both salt and sugar
  • Junk foods
  • Consumption of alcohol.

3. Exposure to harmful substances
It isn’t just the food and drink you ingest that affects liver health. We are constantly exposed to toxic substances

  • Protect your skin. Common products that we use in everyday life can have high levels of toxicity, such as household disinfectants, pesticides, aerosol sprays, paints, and so on. While some amount of exposure is unavoidable, one can wear gloves.
  • Get vaccinated. Vaccination is the most effective method of preventing chronic liver disease that is associated with hepatitis a and b infections.
  • Stay away from body fluids and blood of other people.

Ayurvedic herbs for healthy liver function-

1. Turmeric-

This anti-inflammatory ‘spice of life’ is highly regarded in ayurveda for its purifying effects. It is often used in cleansing rituals and diets to detoxify the liver.
Ayurvedic physicians also recommend consuming a glass of warm milk with a teaspoon of turmeric powder daily.

2. Manjistha-
In ayurveda, manjistha is regarded as a blood purifier and lymph mover. Manjistha comes with a potent cooling effect and is ideal for soothing aggravated pitta, which is why it is regarded as beneficial for liver disease protection.

3. Ginger-
Ginger is now one of the most widely used culinary herbs across the world, the herb is regarded as a superfood that destroys ama or toxins and supports healthy digestion and respiration. Although its rasa and virya make it potentially pitta aggravating, it can be beneficial for the liver when consumed in moderation.

4. Cinnamon-
The herb is regarded as excellent for pacifying vata and kapha, but is a potential pitta aggravator. This is why users are advised to consume it in moderation.
One of these benefits relates directly to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, making it one of the most promising fatty liver home is a strong safeguard against liver damage. Daily dosage of cinnamon should not exceed 1500 mg.
