The problem of loose teeth affects both children and adults equally. While in the case of children it is the process of the loss of their milk teeth, because of the pressure exerted by the permanent teeth as they grow, in case of adults, it is most commonly due to Periodontal Disease. Loose teeth may also occur because of a certain injury or trauma to the jaw. On rare occasions, it is the result of continues and forceful clenching and grinding of the teeth.

Periodontal Disease, more commonly known as gum disease, is a bacterial condition which affects the gums, tissues and bones which hold the teeth together. Periodontal Disease generally develops as a result of neglected oral care, which thus initiates the development of bacteria and the resultant consequences.

Certain symptoms of loose teeth include- pain and discomfort when chewing food, sensitivity of the tooth and swollen gums

Treatment for loose teeth

Some common methods of treatment for loose teeth are-
1. Deep cleaning- It is the initial course of treatment recommended to cure gum diseases. It involves the cleaning out of the plaque and bacteria from the surface of the teeth.
2. Splinting- Loose teeth is often given added support, by setting a splint between the affected teeth and the teeth next to it. The splint is generally created with a tiny piece of metal attached to the top or back of the two teeth.
3. Bite adjustment- This treatment involves the removal of a bit of enamel, so that the affected tooth is not subjected to much force when biting or chewing food.
4. Night guard- Often a doctor recommends the use of a night guard, which looks similar to a sports night guard, so as to lessen the pressure on the teeth while sleeping at night.
5. Periodontal surgery- If the teeth are adversely affected due to the onset of Periodontal Disease, the doctor may recommend surgery to rebuild or repair a tissue or gums.
