When Is A Hair Transplant The Right Solution For You?

First and foremost, it is important to seek the advice of your GP before taking any action. It is also vital to source a reputable, qualified hair loss expert who can provide careful assessment and facilitate transplant surgery via an experienced surgeon.

  • In order to be considered for transplant surgery, you must have a significant amount of good quality existing or 'donor' hair. Hair thinning which occurs in one area e.g. the crown is more likely to be suitable for hair transplantation. Unfortunately large areas of total hair loss are not deemed suitable for transplantation as the success rate of re-growth is minimal.
  • You must also be in general good health. Hair transplant is major surgery, performed under local anaesthetic with an associated recovery period. In order for the surgery to be a success, you should be fit and healthy and ideally you will not suffer any other major medical conditions.
  • There are also age constraints associated with hair transplant surgery. Candidates should be over 18 but many experienced surgeons will not perform a hair transplant on young adults. This is because genetic or natural hair loss is yet to occur and will affect the transplanted hair. Even if you are in your late 20s or early 30s, hair loss can still occur. This means if you undergo surgery, the new hair could fall out and it's a waste of your investment!
  • It's worth noting that there are new surgical techniques involved in hair transplants. One option is FUE - Follicular Unit Extraction - which means that hairs are individually extracted from the back of the head and re-planted across the area. This is a lengthy, pain-staking process but the result is minimal scarring and a very natural-looking hairline. The other main technique employed in hair transplantation is FUT - Follicular Unit Transplantation. This technique involves taking a larger area or 'strip' of hair from the back of the head, dividing it into smaller units and then re-planting those units in the desired area of hair loss. Scarring can be slightly more conspicuous at the back of the head as a larger area has been removed but an expert surgeon will minimise incision marks to ensure rapid healing.

When Should You Go For Hair Transplantation?

Hair transplant is a surgical procedure where hair is surgically implanted on the head. You can opt for this procedure if you suffer from hair loss and bald spots on your head. The surgery comprises of shifting hair follicles from one part of the head to another. Mostly, hair follicles from back of the head are relocated to the balding areas.

The reasons when may opt for a hair transplant are -
1. Involutional alopecia
It is a form of alopecia where the hair growth tends to decrease due to ageing resulting in thinning and shorter hair. The follicles remain in the telogen phase (resting phase) for an extended amount of time. You may opt for a hair transplant surgery to correct this disorder.

2. Male pattern baldness (Androgenic alopecia)
Androgenic alopecia is a condition which is characterized by a gradual receding hairline, especially along the temples. This is caused due to the testosterone hormone being converted in to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which causes shrinking of the hair follicles. If you are affected by male pattern baldness, then you may opt for a hair transplant surgery.

3. Female pattern baldness
Females may also be affected by baldness which is characterized by loss of hair from the top of the head and gradual thinning of hair. It may lead to self-esteem issues; so opting for a hair transplant surgery is recommended.

4. Traction alopecia
This type of hair loss occurs due to exertion of external pressure on the hair which may cause it to fall. If the hair does not grow back then it would result in a bald patch. Thus you may opt for a hair transplant procedure if you suffer from this disorder and experience loss of hair.

5. Trichotillomania
This is a psychological condition where a person pulls out his/her hair. If excessive hair is lost resulting in bald spots, then you may opt for hair transplant surgery.

Surgical Hair Transplantation

One way to struggle hair loss is to transplant hair follicles from the edges and back to the top of the head. This surgery has developed over the years.

Nearly three decades ago, the quality of care was to require massive grafts, plugs of 12 to 20 hairs, and implant them.  It will provide either awfully sensible or satisfactory result. However some men, as they got older and lost some a lot of hair, they got that doll's-hair or corn-row phenomenon.

Today's hair grafts are known as Follicular Unit Hair Transplants of 1 to 4 hairs, transplanted terribly approximate for added natural look.

Another principally out-of-favor method is Scalp Reduction.

Scalp Reduction is to chop hairless scalp out and stitch the remaining skin along to cut back the bald space. Once many of those, you've got a smaller space to transplant. However a scar is left that's noticeable and desires to be transplanted into to be invisible.

Similarly out of fashion are flap-type processes, wherever a flap of hair from a hair-bearing space is removed partially, oscillated around, and connected to a frontal cortex. However this could result in scarring or death or some of the scalp.

How well does Hair Transplants work?

It depends on what quantity healthy hair an individual has accessible for hair transplant. And it depends on the expectations of individuals.

The best candidate for Hair Transplantation Surgery, is those who are facing hair loss issue for several years however has stabilized and isn't losing a lot of hair quickly. An individual must have realistic expectations of what are often done to convey them a natural showing hair line.

Although the majority who pursue Hair Replacement Surgery are men, women make glorious candidates.

When To Go For Hair Transplantation?

Hair transplant is one of the finest developments in medical science. This painless, and effective treatment option can help a person get naturally growing hair just like before. However, a hair-transplant is not the first option to fix hair-fall but the last. One must figure out whether he should go for a hair transplant plan in the first place. We will briefly touch upon some topics that should be considered before taking the plunge.

Is there a chance of hair-fall again?
The answer is, yes. While the newly planted hair becomes visible after three-four months, the original hair might continue to fall. The transplant surgery can be repeated after six months to fix those portions again. It will make the hair dense too.

Who cannot go for a transplant?
For folks who possess less hair on the side and back, a hair transplant may not work out for them. Hair transplant requires dense hair structure at the back. A specialist picks hair from these locations and plugs them in the area where there is no hair. While hair from another part of the body can be extracted, the quality of that hair might vastly vary from the ones that are on the head.

When to go for a transplant?

  1. The timing of the transplant is extremely important. It doesn’t make sense for a teen to go for a transplant. There is a very high possibility of the original hair falling off within few years. This means that the person should go for a re-transplant to cover those portions of the hair again. It, therefore, makes sense to wait and watch before going for a hair transplant process. An ideal age segment to go for this process is around 25-30 years.
  2. It makes sense to consult a doctor rather than just sitting on the hair fall issue. A doctor can successfully decide the rate of hair fall and suggest a suitable time for the treatment. Sitting idle on the hair fall issue can be dangerous. Once the threshold hair density passes, transplant rarely becomes successful.
  3. The transplant process should happen at a time when there is still some hair left in the crown. This is the time when the follicles have the capacity to strengthen. The chances of normal hair regeneration are also high during this time.
  4. One should only approach the transplant process once he has thoroughly done his homework on the surgeon. A specialist surgeon should have enough good will and a good success rate. One should also consider his previous track records and speak to the former patients who have undergone surgery under the doctor. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Dermatologist.

Know Everything About Hair Transplant!

Hair loss due to androgenetic alopecia or pattern baldness is a condition that affects both men and women equally. Surgical hair transplantation is the only solution for restoring the lost hair in pattern baldness when medical hair restoration does not offer you a good hair re-growth. If you have well-defined and clearly established areas or patterns of baldness on the crown with healthy dense coverage of hair at the sides and the back of the head, you are probably suitable for a hair transplant surgery. Hair that is transplanted in the frontal region of the skull generally offers the best results. However, a hair transplant procedure can also be carried out on any other area of your head if you have some bald patch there.

It is best to have detailed information about the hair transplant procedure before you make plans to undergo a surgery. It is only after you have read through all the information that you can understand and appreciate the significance of surgical hair restoration. The information will also help you decide whether you are the right candidate for the hair transplant surgery. Receiving a hair transplant can improve your appearance and self-confidence.

All those who can opt for a hair transplant:

  1. Men with male-pattern baldness

  2. Women suffering from hair thinning

  3. Anyone who has lost some hair from a burn or scalp injury

Hair replacement isn’t a good option for:

  1. Women with a wide-spread pattern of hair loss throughout the scalp

  2. People who don’t have enough “donor” hair sites from which to remove hair for transplant

  3. People who form keloid scars (thick, fibrous scars) after injury or surgery

  4. People whose hair loss is due to medication like chemotherapy

Two types of procedures

It's worth noting that there are new surgical techniques involved in hair transplants:

  1. FUE - Follicular Unit Extraction: The hairs are individually extracted from the back of the head and re-planted across the area. This is a lengthy, pain-staking process but the result is minimal scarring and a very natural-looking hairline.
  2. FUT - Follicular Unit Transplantation: This technique involves taking a larger area or 'strip' of hair from the back of the head, dividing it into smaller units and then re-planting those units in the desired area of hair loss. Scarring can be slightly more conspicuous at the back of the head as a larger area has been removed but an expert surgeon will minimise incision marks to ensure rapid healing.

Hair transplant do, of course, utilise your own natural hair and re-growth can be expected within 4 weeks of surgery. Great care must be taken during your recovery period to protect the newly-transplanted hair. However, once it is deemed safe to resume normal activities, the results can be life-transforming. A successful hair transplant is permanent and can restore confidence and self-esteem.

Know Everything About Hair Transplant!

Who doesn't love a head full of thick, lush and healthy hair? It not only enhances our appearance, but also makes us look and feel young and spirited. So naturally, losing hair in copious amounts or going bald can be a nightmare for many. But with the hair transplant procedure, you can easily get a head full of hair and regain your confidence.

Hair transplant revolves around the surgical removal of hair follicles from a donor site of a body to a balding patch which is called the recipient site. The process is minimally invasive, and grafts containing hair follicles which are resistant to balding, are transplanted to the bald spot. This method is also used for restoring eyebrows, eyelashes, chest hair, beard hair, pubic hair and for filling in accident or surgical scars.

Here is a closer look at how hair transplant is conducted:

After cleaning your scalp, the surgeon will inject a medicine to make the back of your head numb.

He will then either follow the Follicular Unit Strip Surgery (FUSS) or Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) to implement the transplantation.

FUSS procedure: In FUSS, the surgeon will remove a strip of skin, 6 to 10 inches in length, from the back of your head. He will then sew back that portion of the scalp, and it will be hidden by the hair surrounding it. Next, the removed skin strip will be divided into 500 to 2000 minute grafts, with each containing a single hair or a couple of hairs. The type and number of grafts will be based on your hair quality, type, color and the dimensions of the recipient site.

FUE procedure: In FUE, the surgeon will shave the back of your scalp and remove the follicles one by one. The concerned area will heal with small dots and the surrounding hair will conceal it.

FUE technique is the latest and has least complication rates. It is one of the most widely accepted method of hair transplantation due to less bleeding, no linear scarring, faster recovery and better cosmetic acceptability of donor area.

In both the methods of transplant, after the graft is prepared, the surgeon will clean and numb the area where the hair needs to be transplanted to. He will then create slits or holes with a needle or scalpel and carefully place each graft in each hole. It might take 4 to 8 hours for the entire procedure to be conducted. And if you want thicker hair, more sessions might be required.

Here is a look at the other aspects of hair transplantation:

Recovery: Your scalp maybe tender post surgery and you may require pain medicines for quite some time. Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs may also be prescribed. You will be able to get back to work in 2 to 5 days after the procedure.

What to expect: Though in 2 to 3 weeks after the surgical process, your transplanted hair will fall off, you will notice new hair growth in a few months. Often, 60-80% hair grow back in 6-8 months.

Risks: Bleeding, infections, scarring and unnatural hair growth are some of the risks associated with hair transplantation. When new hair begins to grow, some people complain of inflammation of the hair follicles, but this can be resolved with medication. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dermatologist.

Care After Hair Transplant

Male pattern baldness and other kinds of baldness can turn out to be a pesky affair that also eventually might have a bearing on your confidence level. A hair transplant is an excellent way of dealing with this issue. There are many things, which you must take care of, after the procedure. Here are a few of those things.
