About Herbs -

Ayurveda was first introduced by Dhanvantari, who is a Hindu God of medicine and an avatar of lord Vishnu. There are three Ayurvedic texts which attain the information of three energy channels or tridosha: Kapha, Pitta and Vata. The names of the three tests are as follows-

  • Charaka Samhita

  • Susruta Samhita and

  • AshtangaHridayam

Ayurveda, which is also considered as the ancient Indian medical system had been a boon to amankind and herbs are the main component in the pharmacy of Ayurveda. The basic objective of introducing Ayurveda was to maintain a balance between mind, body and environment. Practitioners use Ayurveda to cleanse the body, boosting immune system. Keeping the body, mind and soul in aperfect balance. Now Ayurveda has become an art of life.

Ayurvedic herbs that boost the healthy body functions-

  1. Arjuna (Terminalia Arjuna)–Arjuna being medicinally important, it is one of the most religious and sacred tree. Arjuna tree is a large sized deciduous evergreen tree having very long and strong roots. It belongs to the Combretaceae family and mainly found in tropical region of the world. This tree has following health benefits-
    • Arjuna is considered to be an amazing health tonic helps in strengthens the heart muscles and improves the functioning of heart.
    • It is a great astringent, which helps in detoxifying the blood.
    • Attaining homeostatic properties helps to relieve bleeding problems and control Pitta states.
  2. Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) – Tulsiis also known as holy basil and every part of this plant is worshipped as Goddess. It is known to be enriched with many phytochemicals, which provides its many useful properties like antibacterial, antifungal, anti-oxidant, anti-carcinogenic, neuro-protective etc. It calms Vata and Kapha dosha while triggers Pitta. It is used in various diseases-
  3. Turmeric (Curcuma longa) –Turmeric, which is commonly known as haldi or haridra, is a perennial herbaceous plant and a native plant of India. Apart from being used as a spice in houses and in Indian wedding ceremonies, it possessestremendous medicinal properties which have been used for centuries. This herb has following medicinal benefits-
    • Haldi helps inbalancing thetridoshas by triggering pitta and vata dosha while reducing kapha dosha.
    • Promotes digestion.
    • It’s a great blood purifier, thus helping in flushing out toxins from the body.
  4. Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum)– Fenugreek iscommonly known as methi in Hindi and is known to bean integral part of Ayurveda. Methi is a very important Indian herb used as a flavoring agent. It is an herbaceous annual plant,which is a native plant of western Mediterranean species. Apart from being an important raw material in industrial applications, it has various medicinal properties-
    • It possesses anti-diabetic, antioxidant and anti-cancerous properties.
    • It helps in reducing bleeding disorders.
    • It’s a great appetizer.
    • Secondary metabolites that are present in Methi, provides its antimicrobial activity.
    • It possesses analgesic and laxative propertiestoo.
  5. Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia)– Giloy is being used since ages for various diseases, which is also known as Amrita in Sanskrit. This herb possesses excellent properties of antioxidants, which helps in increasing immunity and elevating platelet count in denguefever. It has innumerable medicinal properties like –
    • Chronic fever and infections.
    • Lowers high blood glucose level, thus helps in treating diabetes.
    • Fights respiratory problems.
    • Reduces stress and anxiety.
    • It possesses anti-arthritic and anti-inflammatory properties.
       
  6. Bhumi Amla(Phyllanthus niruri)- Bhumi Amla, which is also known as Tamalaki in Sanskrit is a tropical plant that grows up to 50-70cm in height. Bhumi Amla is loaded with medicinal properties like anti-viral, appetizer, diuretic, analgesic, laxative, astringent and vermin fungal etc. Being a magnificent herb, it is useful in many diseases and syndromes, some of them are as follows-
  7. Hing(Ferula asafetida) – Ferula is an ancient Indian ingredient which is being usedsince centuries, which is also known as hing in Sanskrit language. This traditionally important herb has various properties like anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and anti-viral. It’s really helpful in treating various disorders like-
    • Being an antispasmodic it is used to cure abdominal pain, worm infestation and other chronic digestive problems.
    • It works tremendously in treating asthma, cough, common cold, whooping cough and other respiratory disorders.
  8. Harad (Terminalia chebula) -Harad is a deciduous tree which measures up to 25-30meters, which is a native tree of china, Nepal and Sri Lanka. It is an herb possessing astringent, anti-oxidant and laxative properties. Harad works effectively in reducing inflammation and flushing out toxins from the body. It is an effective tonic for the nervous system.
     
  9. Amla (Emblica Officinalis)-Amla is a medium sized deciduous plant that belongs to phyllanthaceae family. It possessess many medicinal properties like it maintains the balance between tridoshas i.e. Vata, Pitta and Kapha. It’s an amazing anti-ageing herb, improves vision, reduces symptoms of diabetes and attains antifungal and antibacterial properties. Amla has also proved to be working tremendously in treating bleeding disorders.
     
  10. Punaranava (Boerhavia diffusa)–Punaranava is an important ancient Ayurvedic herb, which is native to India which belongs to Nyctaginaceae family. It possessess following properties-
    • It attainsanti-inflammatory, anti-ageing, anti-oxidative and immuno-boosting properties.
    • Reduces cough and asthma.
    • Detoxification of liver and rejuvenating it.
    • Great appetizer, reduces abdominal problems and cures other digestive disorders.
    • It is recommended to patients suffering from jaundice and hepatitis.
    • Punaranava is beneficial in curing infertility and to treat impotence.
