This form of cancer afflicts the long hollow tube that connects the mouth with the stomach. This tube is known as the oesophagus which helps in carriage of food from the mouth to the digestive system. This cancer usually starts in the cells that can be found in the lining of this tube with the symptoms ranging from dysphagia or swallowing difficulties to hoarse coughing.
HOW IS ESOPHAGEAL CANCER DIAGNOSED?
Oncologists consider all your symptoms and evaluate your medical history. He or she may order for an endoscopy of the esophagus for finding out the cause of pain. Biopsy of the esophageal tissue may confirm diagnosis.
HOW IS ESOPHAGEAL CANCER TREATED?
Treatment of Esophageal Cancer depends on the stage i.e. 1, 2, 3 and 4. Surgery is usually suggested if the cancer is spread to a small area and the tumour is taken out. In some cases, part of the pipe may also be taken out followed with chemotherapy and radiation.
