Hba1c is the best blood test for dm. It's shows the average level of blood sugar over last three months. Random and postprandial can tell only current blood sugar levels.

Umaji, Thanks for the query. When one is adequate dosage of levothyroxine, TSH is maintained < 3 mU/L, at that level all the troublesome symptoms of hypothyroidism are in complete check. As you are complaining of some of the symptoms of hypothyroidism, it is better to check the TSH level. If the level is higher than above mentioned, dosage may have to be increased. If you want I can help in achieving better control of the condition, for that you need to come back with following details: weight, height, T4 & TSH levls, then I will be able to guide specifically. It is better if you com in a private conversation. Thanks.

Doctor I am diabetic patient and under medication. Is it possible if I stop medicine and instead take care of my diet habit and go for walking everyday. Thanks.

Fellowship in Diabetes Management, MBBS
General Physician,
Its not possible. Because your body doesnt produce enough insulin to keep your blood sugar normal with diet and walking alone.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. It is absolutely necessary to control hypothyroidism very effectively to succeed in your efforts to loose weight. For that TSH should be maintained around 3 to 4 mU/L. So first check TSH levels, then if needed increase the dose of thyroxine to bring TSH to desired level. Plus you will have to take a restricted diet and exercise daily for over 1 hour. Better if you join a gym. Thanks.

Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome

'Metabolic' are the biochemical processes that are involved in the normal functioning of your body. Risk factors are common traits, habits or conditions that raise your risk of developing a disease. Metabolic syndrome is the term used for a group of factors that increase your risk of developing the cardiac diseases and other health issues, like stroke and diabetes. Metabolic syndrome is becoming a prevalent disorder due to a sharp rise in the rate of obesity among adults. Metabolic syndrome may soon overtake smoking as the dominant risk factor responsible for heart disorders.

The following are some of the dominant symptoms of metabolic syndrome:

  1. Abdominal obesity
  2. A high level of Triglyceride( 150 and higher)
  3. A lowered level of HDL (good cholesterol)
  4. Blood pressure of 130/85 and above
  5. Increased level of blood sugar (fasting) of 110 or more

It is not impossible to prevent the onset of metabolic syndrome. Slight lifestyle alterations can help to delay the onset of the disorder. In order to control metabolic syndrome effectively, you need to require long term dedication towards your health.

The following are some tips that may help you to control your metabolic syndrome:

  1. Lead an active life: Studies suggest that if you lead an active life, you run a lower risk of developing metabolic syndrome. If you exercise on a regular basis and participate in physical activities, it will help you to reduce your blood pressure level. Active lifestyle is also known to improve your insulin sensitivity, which will help you to control your metabolic syndrome effectively.
  2. Healthy diet: A healthy and balanced diet that comprises of fresh leafy vegetables, seasonal fruits and whole grains carbohydrates is good for your overall health and helps to prevent or slow down the onset of metabolic syndrome.
  3. Drink in moderation: A glass of wine on a daily basis is beneficial for your health. According to recent studies, moderate intake of wine may lower a person's risk of developing metabolic syndrome. It must be kept in mind that wine is only helpful when consumed in moderation. In fact, over indulgence in wine is actually injurious to health.
  4. Maintain an ideal body weight: Obese people are more prone to suffer from high blood pressure and increased blood sugar level; all of which fuel the risk of developing metabolic syndrome. Reduce your excessive body fat to achieve an ideal body weight to lead a healthy life. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a endocrinologist.

Hello Ms. lybrate-user Can you just provide some details that what is your sugar level - random, fasting & PP. One thing I want to tell you that diabetes is only a lifestyle hazard, you can treat your diabetes by just following a well structured diet. Any medicines will never cure your diabetes. Infact we have plenty of examples who have cured their diabetes by just following a good diet plan and too in a very short period of time. So I would suggest you to treat your diabetic condition with diet only instead of medicines. Hope you got your answer. If you have any query then you can text me anytime. Best Of Luck.

Hi, tsh 3.49 milli units/l, is good, but to conceive tsh levels have to be around 0.1 to 2.0 milli units / l, so it is necessary that thyroxine dosage may have to be increased. You may go ahead with the investigations suggested by the doctor, but reducing tsh level to the limit mentioned above is a must. Similarly it is recommended that during 1 st trimester tsh should be 0.1 to 2 milli units, 2nd trimester 0.3 to 3.0 milli units/l and 3rd trimester 0.3 to 3.5 milli units/l. So please take care and thanks for the question.
