4 Reasons Why Breastfeeding is so Crucial!

4 Reasons Why Breastfeeding is so Crucial!

Breast milk provides essential nutrients for infants and is a mix of nutrients, which include vitamins, proteins and fat that are necessary for a baby's growth. Apart from benefitting babies, breastfeeding benefits mothers too.

Here are 4 benefits of breastfeeding:

1) Provides nutrients and protection to the baby - The best food a mother can give to her baby is her breast milk. It helps your baby to grow and develop. Breast milk is custom-made by all mothers for their own babies and, thus, contains a perfect mix of essential nutrients. Breast milk contains a mixture of protein, carbohydrate, fat, vitamins and minerals, which are very important for the proper growth and development of the baby. It also contains many antibodies that reduce the chance of diseases and allergies. In fact, the milk's content changes as your baby grows to keep up with the infant's needs.

2) Convenience - The milk from breasts is always safe and fresh, and is precisely of the right temperature, which what makes it a convenient food for the baby. What's more, it doesn't require heating, boiling or sterilizing as such; and can be fed to the baby anywhere, anytime.

3) Benefits mothers - According to a research, breastfeeding, to an extent, provides protection against breast and ovarian cancer. It also serves as a measure of protection against weak bones in the later part of life. Calories are required in order to produce milk. So, breastfeeding helps to gradually lose weight after pregnancy as well. Moreover, breast feeding also defers the return of menstruation for a little while.

4) Continues the special relationship between mother and child - The bond between a mother and a child strengthens due to the intimacy and the closeness involved in breastfeeding. One of the remarkable facts about this is the more a baby breastfeeds, the more milk the mother produces.

Start separating the baby from you for little times initially and then slowly increasing it let him mix up with his age children around or let some other family member look after him for some time you will not be allowed to take him with you at the time if delivery neither it's good for the child.

Menstrual irregularities can be caused by a variety of conditions, including pregnancy, hormonal imbalances, infections, malignancies, diseases, trauma, and certain medications. Polycystic ovarian syndrome also leads to irregular ovulation and an irregular menstrual cycle. Seeing a doctor in person really is the most important thing you can do to get your menstrual cycle regular again! and, the standard health advice always applies: to balance your hormones and regulate your menstrual cycle, get regular exercise (but do not exercise excessively), eat a healthy diet, get the sleep your body needs, and deal with stress in healthy ways. And, if you are taking prescription medication, find out if it affects your hormones (which affects your period).

Hello, 1. Pregnancy needs to be ruled out. 2. Once ruled out you can opt for a withdrawal bleed with progesterones. 3. You should get evaluated for pcos with an ultrasound pelvis and hormonal profile for likely increased androgens levels. Regards.

Is it safe to have anal sex with my wife or is it harmful. What can i use so that she has least pain while having anal sex ?

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), Health Administration
Ayurveda,
Anal sex can expose its participants to two principal dangers: infections due to the high number of infectious microorganisms not found elsewhere on the body, and physical damage to the anus and rectum due to their fragility. Increased experimentation with anal sex by people without sound knowledge about risks and what safety measures do and do not work may be linked to an increase in sexually transmitted infections (STIs/STDs) and HIV infection; for example, teenagers may consider vaginal intercourse riskier than anal intercourse and believe that a STI can only result from the former activity. Unprotected receptive anal sex is the sex act most likely to result in HIV transmission. Other infections that can be transmitted by unprotected anal sex are human papillomavirus (HPV) (which can increase risk of anal cancer); typhoid fever; amoebiasis; chlamydia; cryptosporidiosis; E. Coli infections; giardiasis; gonorrhea;hepatitis A; hepatitis B; hepatitis C; herpes simplex; Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (HHV-8);lymphogranuloma venereum; Mycoplasma hominis; Mycoplasma genitalium; pubic lice; salmonellosis; shigella; syphilis;tuberculosis; and Ureaplasma urealyticum.

Health Supplements - Do We Really Need Them?

Health Supplements - Do We Really Need Them?

It is important for you to have a healthy and balanced body in order to perform your daily activities well. People often think health supplements are efficient alternatives to a healthy diet and regular physical exercise while most of the doctors and nutritionists believe that there is no need for any health supplement if you take in right quantity and quality of food and engage in regular exercise. While health supplements are not alternatives to a healthy lifestyle, they are somewhat necessary for everyday health in the hectic lifestyles of today.

Nowadays, stress (learn more about for Controlling Everyday STRESS) is a constant companion and the foods that we consume are often not of proper quality. You may think that you are taking foods full of nutrients but pesticides and chemicals used farming diminish the nutrient content from the crops. This creates a necessity for taking health supplements for the proper nourishment of body.People with certain medical conditions also need supplements. Supplements fill the gap in your diet.

Beneficial health supplements:

  1. Pregnant women and breastfeeding (leanr more about the Benefits of Breastfeeding) women need iron supplements. Folic acid can be supplemented in your diet in order to reduce the chances of birth defects.
  2. You can take in vitamin D supplements if they don't get enough sunlight every day. Adults, especially after the age of 40 need vitamin D and calcium supplements to maintain bone health.
  3. Adults above the age of 40 are also advised to take vitamin B-12 supplements.

Supplements have some side effects depending upon your health condition. If you take some supplements along with some other medicines or before surgeries, they can lead to serious complications. Research has concluded that some vitamin and minerals supplements particularly iron supplements, increase the risk of death. So it is necessary to have a proper examination of the body before you take health supplements. The risk factors include:

  1. Taking vitamin B6 regularly in excess of 100 mg may lead to damage of your nerves
  2. Taking 400 international units of vitamin E on a regular basis increases the health risk and may even lead to premature death
  3. Taking multivitamins does not supplement poor eating habits. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult the doctor.

Calorie Count of Your Favourite Indian Dishes

Calorie Count of Your Favourite Indian Dishes

Indians have always been known for their passion of food, which is usually rich and creamy. With the recent calorie consciousness setting in, the Indian foods are also blamed for being rich in calories. It is therefore time to take a step back and watch the calories that you are packing with each meal.

Listed below are some common Indian foods, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian, and their corresponding caloric value. The next time you plan your meal, take a conscious decision based on your overall health. This does not mean you should not relish these exotic dishes. Make sure if you have had a ghee-laden gaajar ka halwa, make sure to burn that extra calories by extending your gym time.

  1. Chicken curry: This popular dish with curry, chicken, and other spices like ginger, saffron and other spices contain about 600 kcal for a serving.
  2. Daal: About 300 g of cooked dal has about 350 kcal. The good news with daal is that gives the maximum amount of proteins, especially for non-meat eaters.
  3. Biryani: A bowl of vegetable biryani contains about 550 kcal while chicken biryani gives about 800 kcal. Again, this depends on the additional ingredients like the amount of ghee or oil used and other ingredients.
  4. Korma: While the chicken korma gives up to 900 kcal, a bowl of vegetable curry gives about 350 kcal.
  5. Samosas: A meat samosa has about 320 kcal, while a vegetable samosa has about 250 kcal.
  6. Chole bature: This fried food with big sized puris and chickpeas pack in about 450 kcal per serving.
  7. Pav bhaji: Another popular evening snack with fried bread and gravy, this has loads of butter applied to the bread and so it is not surprise that you add about 450 kcal with a plate of pav bhaji.
  8. Jalebi: This popular Indian sweet is made by deep-frying wheat-flour batter in circular shapes and soaking it in sugary syrup. Whether eaten hot or cold, it gives you about 460 kcal per serving. Add a spoonful of rich creamy rabdi to it and there would be another 150 kcal.
  9. Ras malai: This rich creamy sweet is extremely popular in Northern parts of India and provides about 250 kcal per serving
  10. Halwa: If loaded with ghee, a cupful of carrot halwa can give you about 250 kcal.Onion pakoras: This popular spicy snack contains deep fried gram flour and onions and packs in about 200 kcal when 3 pieces are eaten.

Now that you know how much calories some of your regular foods are carrying, make a mental note of all the foods you are eating on a daily basis, and make sure it does not cross about 2000 per day.

Dear user. In my opinion, you cannot convince him. I am sure that this is your first sexual intercourse. But he may not agree because he may not know the medical reasons of your lack of blood during intercourse. You should urge him to take up a sexual education session. Take care.

Last month I had unprotected sex with my girlfriend and now she missed her periods and she is pregnant! Now where should I go?

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Gurgaon
Hi Nitish. If you have confirmed her pregnancy are its positive then you should get an ultrasound done. According to the location and gestational size of pregnancy, the further mode of treatment can be established. If the pregnancy is beyond 9 weeks or if its in the tubes the removal is via different surgical procedures, however if its a uterine pregnancy less than 9 weeks then you use medicines to terminate the pregnancy. Hope this has been helpful.
