Hello lybrate-user, I think you should consult any arthroscopy and sports surgeon at your place and get a MRI done. You should know the diagnosis and problem by expert clinical examination and investigation before any joint injection.

Insomnia and Depression - Is There A Link Between Them?

Insomnia and Depression - Is There A Link Between Them?

In today’s stressful environment, more and more people are being diagnosed with psychological disorders such as insomnia and depression. Neither of the two are things which people feel lucky to possess. However, it is interesting to note that there is a link between the two conditions. Also, the problems are a lot more common than a person is likely to first think; 80% of depressed people suffer from chronic insomnia!

For a long time until recently, many people were of the opinion that most depressed people were insomniac. But that is not really correct. The two issues do overlap to a large extent, but they are different from each other. Again, that does not mean one cannot affect the other.

When a person has depression, one of the main things that he or she can experience is a lack of pleasure from the activities and happenings which occur in his or her daily life. Similarly, when a person does not get enough sleep or even just cannot sleep, he or she is quite likely to display a tendency to worry. Often, worrying sets the stage for depression to develop in the person. In fact, doctors have observed that people who do not sleep enough are more likely to undergo treatment for depression than the others.

Recent findings have concluded that when a person sleeps better, the case of depression also shows an uptick. In addition to this, the habit of sleeping well can also go quite a long way to make sure that a person does not relapse into depression. According to some sleep therapies, people who suffer from lack of sleep are advised to follow a systematic routine of getting to bed and getting out of bed. Activities including reading in bed or watching TV after going to bed must be avoided. While there are various means to help a person sleep better, the choice as to which one would suit a person in the best possible way is only best decided by the person’s personal doctor. What is for sure is the fact that a person can effectively sleep to a better life!

So, it can be said that if a person wants to cure his/her depression and enjoy life being peppy, napping away is not such a bad idea after all. Having said that, everything is good only up to a certain limit!

Sometime my pain goes to side of thigh or side hip. Sometime it comes to lower leg. Sometime behind the knee And sometime in my knee (specially in morning). I have no back pain. But the pain changes everytime.

Sciatica refers to pain that begins in the hip and buttocks and continues all the way down the leg. This condition is often accompanied by low back pain, which can be more or less severe than the leg pain. The term “sciatica” indicates that the sciatic nerve, which travels from the lower back through the buttocks and into the leg, is thought to be the cause of the pain in this condition. True sciatica is a condition that occurs when a herniated lumbar disc compresses one of the contributing roots of the sciatic nerve. This type of low back pain is less common than other causes and conditions that produce back pain. Homeopathy as a natural system of medicine offers distinct advantages to the people who suffer from sciatica. The biggest advantage that homoeopathy offers is that it is able to treat the pain very effectively and is able to rectify the compression or irritation on the sciatic nerve. Another great benefit of using homoeopathy is that along with the treatment of sciatica homoeopathy also aims at strengthening the patient’s constitution in order to prevent further recurrences. Wear and tear phenomena are common for everyone. If you happen to use the bones in one position only all the time or most of the time, then, naturally, that point will suffer more friction loss than other places. If friction loss occurs evenly, people will lose some height only with age. But, if it has not occurred evenly then, more friction loss occurring in one place can damage disc to cause disc degeneration or disc bulge or disc prolapse which can induce sciatica. So, caring position is equally important against medicines to rule out exciting cause or maintaining cause. The goal of treatment should not be aimed only at relief but also to prevent recurrence. Rebounding, recurring attack can be given knock outs, when the reviver counsels the sufferer about correct posture in addition to drugs. In addition, “No more attacks” can be brought easily, when a Homeopath selects and prescribes a right drug constitutionally with detailed analyses of cause, nature of pain, aggravating factors, characteristic symptoms of disease and characteristic symptoms of the sufferer. Homeopathy can provide miraculous relief from this nervous pain without any side-effects by controlling the inflammation and infection of the nerves. Also, Homeopathy can treat paralysis or weakness of the leg by rejuvenating the sciatic nerve. It favours enhancement of neuron regeneration / reduction of disc bulge / ruling out other causes to revive impinged nerve. You can easily take an online consultation for further treatment guidance and permanent cure without any side effects.

Arthritis: 5 Lifestyle Changes To Manage It!

Arthritis: 5 Lifestyle Changes To Manage It!

Arthritis is a common musculoskeletal condition that affects elderly men and women. Joint pain, stiffness and inflammation are the most common symptoms of this condition. This pain can get so bad as to affect your movement and leave you unable to do simple things like walking up stairs or even simply turning a doorknob.

Arthritis cannot be reversed but with medication and a few lifestyle changes, your quality of life can be improved.

  1. Exercise and weight lossThough it is difficult to do, losing weight can help relieve the pain of arthritis. This takes the pressure off your joints and increases the range of possible motions. Though exercising may be the last thing you want to do, it can help increase your flexibility and help strengthen your muscles. Aerobics, stretching and strength training are ideal for arthritic patients.
  2. Assistive devices: Arthritis can make a person knock kneed or bow legged. Wearing unloading braces, shoe inserts or walking with a cane or shoe inserts can help redistribute your weight and take the pressure of your joints. It can also help relieve pain and prevent arthritis from worsening.
  3. Eating right: Some types of food can worsen arthritic symptoms. This includes processed foods like white flour and sugar, yeast, chemical additives, gluten, hydrogenated and trans fats, milk products, caffeine, alcohol and tobacco. Hence, avoid consuming these foods and instead have a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grain. You could also try alkaline foods like green leafy vegetables, wheatgrass and aloe vera.
  4. Massage therapy: A massage not only de-stresses the body, but can also relieve muscle and joint pain by improving blood circulation. Massages also help break up muscular waste deposits and increase the amount of oxygen circulated in the body. This helps transport nutrients to tissues and carries toxins away. Ideally, an arthritic patient should have a massage 2-3 times a week in the beginning and at least twice a month once the condition has stabilised.
  5. Supplements: Along with eating healthy, including a few supplements in your daily diet can also help alleviate arthritic symptoms. When it comes to rheumatic arthritis; the anti-inflammatory properties of vitamin C help fight arthritis by promoting bone and cartilage growth and reducing infection. Fish oil is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids that help reduce inflammation, Vitamin D is another supplement that helps relieve arthritic pain by helping the bones absorb calcium faster and preventing further loss of cartilage. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Orthopedist.

Knee arthritis with age is mostly due to wear and tear known as osteoarthritis. There could be many other arthritis which affects knees , but OA is most common with age. You need replacement only if the knee becomes severely damaged. Operation not advisable usually before 60. If you keep weight control and exercise regularly you can galt progression. Many times progression is not in hands and it will get mote worn out with age and one might knee replacement. Some say glycosaminoglycans works fir oa , but frankly evidence miniscule. (Glucosamine) Also make sure that you don't have other arthritis type which can be probably treated medically

Cartilage Damage - Causes and Treatment

Cartilage Damage - Causes and Treatment

Have you undergone cartilage damage recently and are seeking ideal treatment measures? Cartilage damage is a common form of injury that involves your knees. Other joints such as the ankles, elbows and hips may also be affected by cartilage damage. Cartilage, the tough and flexible tissues covering the surface of your joints, acts as a shock absorber, allowing the bones to slide over each other. Cartilage damage may occur because of injuries such as a gradual wear, sports injuries and osteoarthritis. While acute cartilage damage may heal on its own, severe damage may need treatment via surgical measures.

Treatment

Physiotherapy

  • Physiotherapy is effective when you experience difficulty in moving your affected joint.
  • It is also an important part of recovery if you have to undergo surgical procedures for treating cartilage damage.
  • A physiotherapist will teach you certain exercises that are effective for strengthening the muscles that surround and support your affected joint.
  • This helps in reducing pain and pressure on the joint.

Surgery

  • Severe and serious cartilage damage does not heal effectively on its own, and a surgery may be required for treatment.
  • Usually, surgery is performed by using Arthroscopy. This is a form of keyhole surgery in which certain instruments are inserted into your affected joint via incisions or small cuts.
  • In some cases, larger incisions have to be made.
  • Such surgeries are carried out after giving general anesthesia to the patient.

The most common surgeries that are undertaken in cases of cartilage damage include the following:

Lavage and debridement

  • In this form of surgery, your joint is cleaned for the removal of any loose tissues.
  • The damaged edges are trimmed to be made smooth. Sometimes, the damage may also be repaired during the same time.

Marrow stimulation

  • In this procedure, tiny holes are made on the bone beneath your damaged cartilage that releases the bone marrow in it.
  • The marrow cells stimulate the production of new cartilage.

Mosaicplasty

  • In this procedure, small plugs of healthy cartilage from areas of a joint that are non-weight bearing are removed and used for replacing areas of the affected cartilage.

Osteotomy

  • This procedure involves the alteration of the alignment of your leg for reducing pressure on the damaged area.
  • It is effective in improving pain.
  • A wedge of bone may be removed or added from your thigh bone or shin bone.
  • The bone gets fixed with a plate till it gets healed.

In some cases, a joint replacement surgery has to be carried out. In this procedure, the entire affected joint is removed and replaced with an artificial joint. Hip replacement and knee replacement are common examples of this kind of surgery.

Osteoarthritis And Its Complications!

Osteoarthritis And Its Complications!

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It affects millions of people around the world and is caused due to the gradual wear and tear of the protective cartilage at the end of your bones. The condition most commonly affects the joints in the hands, knees, hips and spine although it can damage any joint in the body.

The symptoms of osteoarthritis develop slowly and get worse with time, and include pain during and after physical activities like movement. The joints may become tender and may pain even with the application of light pressure. Stiffness and loss of flexibility are some of the other symptoms. The loss of cartilage due to gradual wear and tear causes the condition. It causes the smooth surface of the cartilage to become rough, giving rise to friction.

Some of the risk factors involved that can increase your chances of developing the condition are:

  • Old age - The chance of osteoarthritis increases with a person's age.
  • Sex - A study concluded that women are more likely to develop the condition. Although there isn't an established reason, lesser physical activity is attributed as a possible cause.
  • Obesity - Having excessive body weight can be a contributing factor. This is because it puts added pressure on the weight-bearing joints, such as the hips and the knees.
  • Joint injuries - Joint injuries contracted due to sports activities, accidents or other such factors can increase the likelihood of this condition.
  • Genetics - In some of the cases, the condition is observed to be passed from generation to generation.
  • Bone deformities - Some people who are born with bone deformities and defects can have greater chances of having this condition.
  • Other diseases - Having diseases like diabetes and gout can increase the risk of the condition.

Some of the complications of this disease are:

- Joint pain and stiffness may cause hurdles in daily activities. Daily activities like changing clothes can be painful.
- Some people are unable to work any longer. Joint replacement surgeries are advised by doctors in these cases. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Orthopedist.

How Ayurveda Helps Manage Arthritis?

Arthritis is an inflammatory condition that affects the joints and bones of the patient and creates general problems when it comes to mobility and other such postures, which require some amount of physical stamina and strain. This kind of condition can be of many types. Furthermore, it can affect many different parts of the body right from the knees to the shoulders and the wrists. There are many forms of treatment for this condition, which may be carried out by orthopedic specialists as well as other practitioners of alternative medicine.

Read on to find out why Ayurveda is one of the best ways to deal with this condition.

  1. Ancient science: Ayurveda is an ancient science that is steeped in the logic of ages, and it has been allowed to evolve over numerous centuries, which makes it all the more authentic when it comes to various forms of treatment.
  2. Combination of measures: Ayurveda is not just a field of medicine, but it is primarily known as a life science because it combines a variety of measures that have to do with inside out cleansing of the system. From massages to herbal medicines, yoga postures to lifestyle changes, this form of treatment can help the patient get rid of the condition rather than just treat the symptoms.
  3. Massages: When we use a particular oil or herb to massage our bodies, we are actually imbibing the goodness and richness of those elements, which are ideal for the condition that we are suffering from. This oil that may be derived from cloves or various other elements that are naturally found, can actually seep right into the bones and joints to repair the condition. Mustard oil and camphor are also well known oils for arthritis.
  4. Doshas: Ayurveda depends on the various doshas for a proper form of diagnosis, and arthritis comes under the Data dosha. This typically affects the energy, surrounding the proper functioning of the joints and therefore, one can safely say that this is a well-researched body of science, which is being put to use so as to prescribe medicines and other forms of treatment for that particular dosha.
  5. Exercise: The yogic postures are known to have helped many people and the various asanas that are specifically required for an arthritis patient will help in doing away with the root cause of the disease. These asanas include the less rigorous ones that can build strength and stamina so that the patient is able to lead a more normal and healthy life.
  6. Lifestyle changes: The diet changes that will be prescribed for arthritis-affected patients along with the changes in one’s routine, will help in reaching the root cause of the condition so that he or she may get a better chance at normalcy in the long run. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an ayurveda.

Knee Pain And Its Causes!

Knee pain is something that can affect anyone - irrespective of their age. While sometimes it may be of minor importance - and can easily be handled by self-care, often, lingering pain is a manifestation of some other serious underlying problem, such as arthritis. In this case, it is imperative that you consult a doctor and take appropriate measures to combat it.

Causes :

Arthritis: The chief cause of lingering knee pain, arthritis itself can be of a number of types:

  • Osteoarthritis, which is a result of deterioration of cartilages due to wear and tear
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis, an inflammatory chronic disorder
  • Septic Arthritis, causing pain, swelling and redness.
  • Gout caused due to the development of uric acid crystals in the joints

Fractures: These are caused by the breaking up of the kneecap due to falls or collisions.
ACL Injuries: Caused due to the tearing of the anterior cruciate ligament (that connects the femur and the shinbone). Especially common in sportspersons such as footballers or basketball players.
Meniscus tears: The meniscus or the rubber-like cartilage (that acts as a shock absorber) can be torn by sudden jerks or excess pressure.

Symptoms:The major symptoms of knee pain include weakness, redness, instability, stiffness or the inability to properly straighten or move the leg. Often, a deformity is also visible, such as a bone sticking out of the leg - in which case it is advisable to consult a doctor immediately.

  • Possible risks: Factors which include the odds of being inflicted by knee pain and cause serious complications include :
  • Being overweight: This exponentially increases the stress or pressure that is applied on the knee joints - even in doing mundane tasks like walking up and down stairs.
  • Excessive physical activity: Some activities, such as sports apply excess stress on the knees as compared to other tasks.
  • Loss of muscle flexibility: Tightness or weakness in muscles causes increasing number of problems in the knees.
