Nocardiosis is a rare infection caused by the Nocardia asteroids bacterium. This type of bacteria can be found in the soil and water of regions around the world. People may become infected with this bacteria when they inhale it or when the bacteria enter an open wound. The infection cannot be spread from one person to another. People at highest risk for nocardia infection are those with a weakened immune system. This includes people who have:
• Been taking steroids or other medicines that weaken the immune system for a long time
• Cushing's disease
• An organ transplant
HOW IS NOCARDIOSIS DIAGNOSED?
The health care provider will examine and listen to the lungs using a stethoscope. You may have abnormal lung sounds, called crackles. Tests that may be done include:
• Bronchoalveolar lavage - fluid is sent for stain and culture, which is taken by bronchoscopy
• Chest x-ray
• CT scan of the chest
• Pleural fluid culture and stain
• Sputum stain and culture
HOW IS NOCARDIOSIS TREATED?
All cases of Nocardiosis are treated with long-term and low-dose antibiotics known as sulfonamides. In a severe case of Nocardiosis wherein the patient develops an abscess due to this infection, the doctor may recommend a surgery.
