Hairy-cell Leukemia is defined as a disease where your bone marrow starts manufacturing too much of B cells, which are also referred to as lymphocytes or white blood cells that fight infection. This is a slow growing type of cancer and symptoms include weight loss, swelling in abdomen, excessive fatigue, easy bruising, etc.
HOW IS HAIRY-CELL LEUKEMIA DIAGNOSED?
Diagnosis of the hairy-cell leukemia would be done by an oncology expert who would include CT scan, bone marrow biopsy, blood test and also physical exams.
HOW IS HAIRY-CELL LEUKEMIA TREATED?
This type of cancer progresses very slowly, hence treatment may not be needed. If the disease shows symptoms, then treatment is needed. Chemotherapy is the first line of treatment. Biological treatments make the cancer cells more familiar to your immune system, so that they can be destroyed easily. Spleen may be removed through surgery in case of rupturing.
