Hairy-cell Leukemia is a rare, slow-growth cancer that affects the blood. Due to this disease the blood produced by the bone marrow contains too many lymphocytes. These cells look hairy under the microscope, hence the name Hairy-cell Leukemia. Symptoms are:
• A feeling of fullness in abdomen
• Easy bruising
• Recurring infections
• Weight loss
HOW IS HAIRY-CELL LEUKEMIA DIAGNOSED?
An oncologist would diagnose hairy-cell leukaemia by recommending a few tests and procedures such as a bone marrow biopsy, a thorough physical examination to check for enlarged spleen or lymph nodes and a complete blood count would be advised.
HOW IS HAIRY-CELL LEUKEMIA TREATED?
Chemotherapy drugs like Cladribine and Pentostatin are the first line of treatment for hairy-cell leukemia. A great majority of people will experience complete or partial remission through the use of chemotherapy. Interferon and Rituximab are biological therapy attempts to make cancer cells more recognizable to immune system. Once the immune system identifies cancer cells as intruders, it can destroy them.
