ratings and reviews)
Tooth fractures can range from minor (involving chipping of the outer tooth layers called enamel and dentin) to severe (involving vertical, diagonal, or horizontal fractures of the tooth and/or root). The tooth may be painful while eating certain foods or while biting in a specific way. One may not feel a constant ache, like it would on cavity or abscess, but the tooth may be more sensitive to cold temperatures.
HOW IS FRACTURED TOOTH DIAGNOSED?
The dentist will do a thorough examination of your mouth and teeth, focusing on the tooth in question. He or she may use a sharp instrument called an explorer to feel for cracks in the tooth and will inspect the gums around the tooth for irregularities. The dentist also may take X-rays, although X-rays often do not show the crack.
HOW IS FRACTURED TOOTH TREATED?
Serious tooth fracture may need a special course of dental treatment involving a root canal treatment along with removal of the tooth and having a denture instead. In case of minor chip-offs, some basic cosmetic dentistry will help.
