Botulism is a rare but serious illness caused by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. This bacterial produces the neurotoxin. The botulism neurotoxin is one of the most potent, lethal substances known. The symptoms include a flaccid paralysis (weakness or slackness) in various muscles. There are three major types of botulism that differ in how they are acquired: food-borne, wound, and infant botulism.
HOW IS BOTULISM DIAGNOSED?
A mouse neutralization bioassay confirms botulism by isolating the botulinum toxin. The most direct way to confirm the diagnosis is to identify the botulinum neurotoxin in the patient's blood, serum, or stool. An Electromyography is generally recommended by the doctor to further determine the problem.
HOW IS BOTULISM TREATED?
Botulism is usually treated with an antitoxin and supportive post-treatment care. Post treatment care includes monitoring respiratory function, and intensive medical and nursing care. In some cases contaminated food is removed from intestinal tract.
DID YOU KNOW?
Good practice in food preparation, particularly preservation and hygiene, prevents botulism.
