Acute diarrhea is caused due to viruses common in children and adults. They are three or more watery stools per day. The infection is caused due to consuming contaminated drinks or food. Diarrhea can also occur due to side effects of antibiotics, food allergies, gastrointestinal diseases, etc.
HOW IS ACUTE DIARRHEA DIAGNOSED?
The symptoms include mild fever along with loose bowel movements more than 3-4 times a day. It may happen after every 20-30 minutes. It could lead to dehydration and loss of water and salt in the body. It could be accompanied with abdominal pain and cramps.
HOW IS ACUTE DIARRHEA TREATED?
In most of the cases simple dietary changes ought to resolve acute diarrhea. Adequate intake of fluids with salt and sugar is essential to avoid dehydration. In case of persistent abdominal pain or diarrhoea lasting more than 48 hours or bloody stools, immediate consultation with a doctor is a must. An antibiotic course may be required in such conditions.
