Coronary artery disease, also known as coronary heart disease or CHD, is a kind of disease in which a wax-like substance called plaque, builds up in the coronary arteries.

Function of Coronary Artery
The task of coronary arteries is to supply oxygen rich blood to the heart muscles. When there is the growth of plaque in these arteries, the condition is termed as atherosclerosis. Plaque builds up over the years, and it hardens or ruptures with time. When plaque gets hardened, it narrows the coronary arteries and thus disrupts the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscles causing coronary heart diseases. Millions of people are diagnosed with heart diseases, nowadays.

Though it is true that living with a heart disease is not easy, it is not impossible either. Many people are successfully leading a happy life in spite of having such diseases. With some major changes in your lifestyle, food habits and with the help of exercises and a healthy diet, it is possible to enjoy a happy life, irrespective of your diseases. 

Here are six ways that would help you to lead a better life, even if you have been diagnosed with coronary artery disease.

  1. Lifestyle changes: This is the first point that needs to be kept in mind if you are a CAD patient. Lifestyle changes are essential to make for a better health and life. Smoking and drinking have to be given up completely. It is advised to avoid secondary smoke, as much as possible.
  2. Exercises: This is the next important activity that needs to be a part of your daily routine to lead a healthy life. Consult with your doctor about the types of exercise that would suit your conditions. Some common exercises that would help are walking, jogging, and swimming, for at least 30 minutes at the most. Choose whichever activity you like doing. The motive of exercises is to get your heart-rate up.
  3. A Heart healthy diet: Get a chart prepared for your diet by a dietitian or by your doctor. This will keep your disease from getting worse. Stick to a heart-healthy eating plan, which consists of foods that can lower your risk of heart attack, stroke, etc. Include more fruits, vegetables, and other high fibre foods in your daily diet. Go for foods that are low in saturated fats, trans-fats, and cholesterol. Try to include fish into your diet.
  4. Maintain a healthy weight: Being overweight or obese aggravates any disease. So it is important to keep your body weight perfect.
  5. Taking medicines as prescribed: It is important to take medicines regularly and as prescribed by the physician.
  6. Keeping tensions, anxiety to a minimum: These will make the situation worse if you are CAD patient. So try to keep tension and anxiety away and lead a healthy life. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Cardiologist.

What Is Angina?

It is true that most people are aware of the fact that ‘angina’ is a term which has something or the other to do with the heart. That being said, very few would be able to answer a question regarding what exactly it is, in a satisfactory manner. So would it not make sense to know more about it and become one of the few?

The term is derived from the ancient language of Latin and refers to a tightness that is felt or a squeezing of the chest. This happens when there is not enough oxygen-rich blood which is reaching the area of the heart muscle. While many people think that angina is a disease, it is actually not true to think that it is! As a matter of fact, it is a symptom of coronary artery disease. It is this disease which is the most common disease which affects the heart.

But why exactly does a person experience angina? Well, the lack of blood which is rich in oxygen occurs when it so happens that the coronary arteries become narrower than they normally should be. This generally happens due to the build-up of plaque. The condition in which this happens is known as atherosclerosis.

When it comes to the sort of people who are at a higher risk of developing angina, it can be said that those who smoke tobacco really do increase their risk, as do those who are overweight or obese and have other lifestyle diseases such as diabetes.

In order to avoid angina, the most important thing a person can possibly control is his or her lifestyle. In fact, a lot of the risk factors related to angina are attributable to the lifestyle a person chooses to lead. Cholesterol levels can be controlled if a person puts enough attention and effort in. Also, avoiding a lifestyle that is sedentary by exercise can not only help with cutting the risk of angina but also the risks of other conditions such as high blood pressure. It is ironic that high blood pressure is one of the potential signals of angina!

It is to be noted that while most people just call angina as it is, there are various types-

  1. Stable angina is when the heart is working harder than usual and medicine helps improve this.

  2. Unstable angina occurs even at rest and is unpredictable. It may also be a signal of a coming heart attack.

  3. Variant and microvascular angina is relievable by medicine and is generally rare.

I am almost 20 years old and my weight is 83 kg my heart beat increases even in jumping or running or little work. I do not eat any fruits and eat very less vegetables. I am feeling very tired after doing exercise or work. What can I do now? I also have pcos.

You need to include green leafy vegetables in your diet and fruits which you can have are apple, peaches, pomegranate, papaya, kiwi, babugosha. Avoid juices (fresh and canned, excess of sugar, chocolates, ice creams, honey, jagerry, junk, oily and fried food. Start your day with luke warm water then have a cup of tea + 5-6 soaked almonds then have a fibre rich and protein rich breakfast like multi grain bread sandwich, oats idly, 2 besan cheela, milk + museli or wheat flakes. Then in mid-morning have a cup of green tea + 1 medium bowl of black chana salad then in lunch have 1-2 multi grain chapati + veg + salad+ curd then in evening have a cup of green tea + murmura chaat or roasted chana (60 gm) then have a light dinner like dal soup + saute vegetables + salad. Do not skip your meals, have small and frequent meals.

Please help. Meri mummy ka pehle 1 saal se fulne ka problem suru hua h.She has uric acid, thyroid, cholesterol problem and vitamin D deficiency. Agar wo allopathy doctor k pas jati h to Doctor bolta stress k Karan hota h.Or in homeopathy without saying something Doctor gave her medicine. She is thinking that it's rheumatoid arthritis or gout attack. Is it true or it's an another problem? Please help me.

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. I have read all the details given. She does seem to have multiple problems. For swelling in the body there many reasons like uncontrolled hypothyroidism (with high TSH), high BP, kidney related issues, so without knowing the exact details it is difficult to give any opinion. My suggestion is please send following details of her: TSH, T4 & T3 levels, BP readings, blood glucose levels (both fasting and after food) and CBC (complete blood cell count) and lipid profile. Plus her weight, height whether she does any exercise (walking) and current medications with dosages. It is better if you come in a private conversation then I will be able to guide specifically and even prescribe the medications. Even to advise you I need to know all the details. Thanks.

I was sleeping and I experienced fluctuations in my heart-rate, my heart was beating faster than usual after I woke up. This is the very first time. It didn't happen before. What might be the cause? Do I have a heart problem, blood pressure or what?

It might be due to stress, drink more water after you wake up and also before you go to bed. It might be due to less water intake available in the body. As you are young you can try this for the next 10 days.

I'm 23 years old and I have gas problem since ages. Never took this so seriously but these days I can't go through it. I get stomach pain sometimes and got belly fat which is making me look dirty. Due to belly fat I'm thinking of not having food even if am hungry. Which makes me fall due to low BP. Once I had stones in kidney, now they're gone (I suppose) Is that affecting?

If you have a doubt of stone you can consult a doctor again and clear your doubts. For your gas problem avoid keeping long gaps in meal, have your meal in 2-2.5 hrs, avoid food like black chana, white chana, cauliflower and cabbage in night. For your belly fat have a glass of luke warm water and then have a cup of green tea + 5-6 soaked almonds then go for a healthy breakfast like milk + musseli / milk+ wheat flakes (1 medium bowl) / 1 medium bowl of vegetable poha / 2-3 oats idly / 2 besan cheela + mint chutney or boiled egg whites. Then in mid morning you can have a cup of green tea + a bowl of papaya / apple then in lunch have 1-2 multigrain chapati +veg+ salad+ curd then in evening again have a cup of green tea + murmura chaat then have a light dinner like 1-2 bowl of vegetable soup + saute vegetables or a bowl of salad. Do not skip any of your meal.

The difference between two arms should not be more than 10 mm, Below 10 mm is considered as normal physiological. More than 20 is abnormal and suggests some abnormality/obstroction in vascular system. Between 10 and 20 should be assessed clinically.

If you had to choose between living a life of restrictions and a life of freedom, you'd choose the latter right? This is a decision most patients have to take when diagnosed with heart disease. Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. You have to continue the anti TB treatment till it is completely cured, which may be 6 to 9 months. To reduce general weakness take extra proteis in your day to day diet. If you can consume eggs then add 3 eggs per day (either boilde or fried), take a balanced diet, increase intake of green leafy vegetables and salads. Also exercise regularly to build muscle strength. Plus get your blood checked to see if you have anemia and also diabetes. Thanks.

Hi, Follow these tips to increase your blood pressure: 1. Increase intake of salt by adding salt to curds rice and taking pickles along with curds rice. 2. Drink plenty of fluids like Nimbu pani, tender coconut, water, buttermilk, fresh fruit juices,etc. 3.Drink hot coffee or tea when you feel dizzy. 4. Take sound sleep for 7-8 hours at night. 5.
