Myotherapy could be defined as a manual therapy that focuses on the diverse aspects of musculoskeletal pain such as its assessment, treatment and rehabilitation while connecting it to associated pathologies. It is also used to treat the soft tissue pain and restricted joint movements which are caused by the muscles or myofacial dysfunction. As this term was discovered by Bonnie Prudden, it is also known as Bonnie Prudden myotherapy. It was introduced with an aim to describe a specific type of trigger point therapy based on the work done by researchers, who worked to know the cause and treatment of pain emerging from myofascial trigger points. In last 40 years, myotherapy has been accepted as an allied health discipline being practised in countries such as Australia, UK, USA, Canada, Malaysia, Thailand and Hong Kong. It simultaneously incorporates many wide range of soft tissue massage and manipulation which include muscle energy technique, dry needling, and joint mobilization. The technique of stretching, nutritional advice, exercise prescription, postural advice and education, heat and cold therapy, ultrasound and TENS are used by myotherapists. Myotherapy finds a string role in curing lower back pain. Even Sciatica' which is caused by tightness in some muscles and weakness in others is seen being cured by myotherapy. Myotherapy treatment restores muscle balance and optimal posture thereby helping the patient in relieving his pain. Myotherapy is quite expensive when compared to other similar therapies.
