Burns - How To Take Care Of Your Self?

Burns are categorized by what is known as degree; greater the severity, greater the degree. Most first and even some second-degree burns are self-treated. However, any burn which is more than 3 inches in diameter should be treated by a professional. Once it achieves satisfactory healing, then it can be managed at home (on their own). The first line of treatment given is very important in how a burn responds and heals; therefore it is important to cool it properly, apply burn ointment, and promote healing.

The first thing to do is to run water for about 10 to 15 minutes over the burn. The effect can be further improved by laying a damp towel over the burn for another 10 minutes. Some people believe in applying ghee or butter or coconut oil over the burn; this only worsens the burn wound. The blisters should not be popped, as this increases the chances of infection. Also remember not to expose the burn to the sun, as it increases the heat and worsens the damage.

The first line of treatment given to a burn decides how well it will respond and heal. Running cold water for at least 15 minutes does wonder for the healing. Not applying ghee or butter, not exposing it to the sun, and not seeking medical attention for a burn greater than 3 inches are some mistakes commonly made. To provide a cool surface, do not apply ice water or ice cubes, as these can cause significant tissue damage.

The silicone dressing can be left in place for up to 7 days and is easily removable, so preferred over others. Removing it does not cause subsequent injury to the burn area. Foam dressings are again nonsticky and come with protective borders. They are used when the wounds are exuding. Alginate dressing is biodegradable and keep the wound moist and promote healing. Burn wounds are dressed only if they are significantly large. Smaller burns (less than 3 inches in diameter) are often left to heal and close on their own.
