High Blood Pressure - What Should You Know?

While sodium tends to constrict the blood vessels thus resulting in a spike in blood pressure levels, potassium tends to have the opposite effect. Potassium is known to relax the arterial walls of the heart and enable a better flow of blood. Thus if you have high levels of sodium in your body resulting in high blood pressure, it is advisable that you consume foods high in potassium to counter its effects.

High Blood pressure was initially thought to be a disease that affected people mostly above the age of 30. However, it has been more frequently noticed in younger adults and even children. In fact, children below the age of 3 as well as babies have also been diagnosed with high blood pressure. Although some of these cases were due to other disorders, most of them had high blood pressure due to unknown reasons which afflict the majority of the adult patients as well.

Although a regular exercise regimen is extremely important to regularize blood pressure levels, training or overtraining with weights has been seen to be a consistent contributor to it rather than being a solution. It is thus recommended by doctors that while working out, especially if you have high blood pressure, it is better that you reduce your weight training. Also, you can reduce the weights and increase repetitions until your blood pressure levels come under control in the long run.

Dark chocolate, in controlled amounts, is actually good in reducing high blood pressure. However, you should keep the amount within half an ounce of chocolate a day. This should help your high blood pressure without adding to weight gain or the addition of excessive sugar in your blood.
