Ayurveda refers to the lower back pain as Kati Shoola which is often triggered by vitiation of the Vata Dosha. Various research suggests that incidences of a back pain are higher in people with severe emotional stress. Thus, it is essential to keep the mind and the body relaxed and stress-free. Light to moderate exercise and physical activities, meditation, are all known to reduce stress by triggering an increased production of Endorphins or the Feel Good hormone. Sleep disorders, insomnia can worsen the back pain. Proper rest and sound sleep can help to reduce the pain.

Some foods are known to cause inflammation and can spell doom for people with back pain. Avoid curd, dairy products, processed foods, aspartame, eggs, beer, or foods that contain trans-fats and gluten. Instead, enrich your diet with fish (salmon, sardines), avocados, green leafy vegetables, kelp, walnuts, spices (ginger, turmeric), flax seeds, to name a few. Kelp is a rich source of Iodine. Thus people dealing with thyroid problems (especially Hyperthyroidism) should avoid eating Kelp.

When it comes to herbal remedies for back pain, turmeric and ginger take the honors. Turmeric, scientific name Curcuma longa contains Curcumin as one of its active ingredients. Curcumin is known for its natural anti-inflammatory properties that play a pivotal role in lowering the back pain. You can have a glass of warm milk with turmeric (1 teaspoon) every night before retiring to bed. Like turmeric, ginger (scientific name Zingiber officinale) also contain an active compound Gingerol that has anti-inflammatory properties. Over-consumption of turmeric can cause stomach upset, diarrhea, nausea, in some people.
