Hello, thanks for the query. For a lady with preexisting diabetes, pregnancy does produce a lot of challenges. 1) there is a need for achieving a strict blood glucose control with glucose remaining between 90 to 120 mg through out the day. 2) just before conception there is a need to shift to insulin, because apart from metformin most other oral anti-diabetics are not preferred in pregnancy. 3) there is a need to check retina more often just before pregnancy and during the gestation. Because pregnancy increases the risk of retinal complications. 4) strict glucose control is absolutely essential to prevent complications in fetus, macrosomia (large baby >3.5 kgs) and complications during delivery. So there is a need to take proper opinion from your ob & gyn doctor, diabetologist and physician. Thanks.

Now I'm pregnant, during 24th week I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes since the value was 153 one hour after having glucose powder (75gms) then I was on diet food for a month (i just stopped having white rice & stopped sugary items) after a month at 28th week ,normal blood test was taken to check fasting blood sugar & postprandial blood sugar, FBS was 73 & pbss was 90. Now I want to know whether i'm diabetic or not. Whether I can have spicy food or not once in a while (like biryani once in a month?

Ideally, your called gestational diabetes. Which means diabetic during pregnancy for now. A strict diet can make you and your baby healthy. Diabetic pregnant ladies are prone to produce a big baby. If you control your diet like say no to biriyani and junk foods. There are more chance of normal delivery. Just a few more days for your delivery then you can eat whatever you want however if you are carving for biriyani. Enjoy it at small quantity.

Hello, In gestational diabetes your aim should be to keep fasting blood sugar less than 95 and postprandial blood sugar less than 120. It's important that along with drug treatment you practice medical nutrition therapy which includes calorie restriction, taking small meals at frequent intervals and 10 min walk after lunch and dinner along with light intensity exercises. Yes, drug treatment with metformin (glycomet) is safe and can be continued. However if treatment with metformin does not help to achieve target blood sugar level than insulin should be considered.

If you have pcod then following guidelin. Get usg done for diagnosisyou need life style modification for pcod for whole life, you should do physical activities like brisk walking or cycling or any activities which leads to perspiration daily for one hour. Start doing for 5 minutes in first week, 10 minutes in 2nd week, 15 minutes in 3rd week within 2-3 months you will reach to your target of doing exercises for one hour/day. You have to control taking high carbohydrate and lipid diet daily. E.g. If you want to take one samosa or one gulabjambu or one pizza or ice cream, you have to do extra workout for 30-60 minutes over above the daily one hour of daily exercises then only you can eat extra calories food otherwise not. So controlling calories intake and daily burning calories regularly wil help to loos one kg/month- slow and steady control over long period. With pcod if your bmi remain between 20 to 25 everything will be fine otherwise you will develop gestational diabetes duri.

I am 5 weeks pregnant. My question is that does dry fig makes body heat and is it unsafe for first trimester.
1. Figs have a higher overall mineral profile than any other common fruit or vegetable. They are particularly high in calcium, iron, potassium, and zinc, key nutrients for a healthy pregnancy. 2. The high potassium content of figs may help to control blood pressure and therefore, the hypertension associated with preeclampsia, a dangerous pregnancy condition. 3. The mineral content of figs closely resembles that of human breast milk! 4. Figs have the highest fiber content of any common fruit. Rich in both insoluble and soluble fiber, figs really help to mitigate the constipation so common during pregnancy. 5. Figs contain a proteolytic enzyme that also aids in digestion, which is naturally slowed during pregnancy. 6. Figs are highly alkaline, and therefore alkalizing, which has been shown to help curb cravings. This may help control those less-than-healthy urges that can sabotage a healthy pregnancy diet. 7. Figs are high in vitamin B6, which has long been thought to be beneficial in alleviating morning sickness. 8. Even the leaves of figs are therapeutic: ingesting them has been shown to reduce and even eliminate the need for insulin in diabetic patients. Therefore, ingesting them may help to control or avoid a case of gestational diabetes. Furthermore, this ability to balance blood sugar levels should help to relieve a whole host of symptoms from morning sickness to mood swings. 9. Dried figs contain significant amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential to the optimal development of the fetus. Consuming ample Omega-3 during pregnancy is also associated with a lower incidence of pre-term labor and premature delivery. 10. Psoralens, a chemical found in figs, has been used to treat many skin pigmentation problems and may be beneficial in preventing melasma.

I'm six months pregnant. I am gaining too much weight like 3 kgs in month. How can I control it.

I'm six months pregnant. I am gaining too much weight like 3 kgs in month. How can I control it.
Consult a qualified Dietitian to control weight gain or weight maintenance in pregnancy. 3 kg weight gain per month is too fast a weight gain. This might lead to many difficulties in the later months including gestational diabetes. You can start with restricting sugars, sweets, refined carbohydrates, bakery items and excess fats. Start walking for 30 mins daily. You can consult me for a customised Diet chart or diet program for the purpose.

Lybrate-user ji, Thanks for the query. You seem to have gestational diabetes. Please get an OGTT (Oral Glucose Tolerance Test) done, to confirm. It is necessary to maintain blood glucose between 90 to 120 mg through out the day during gestational period. So you do need Insulin. Therefore please consult a local diabetologist and start the therapy. Or come in a private conversation with results of OGTT, then I will be able to advise. It is absolutely essential to achieve strict glucose control for the benefit of the fetus and for expected outcome of pregnancy. Thanks.
