Palpitation can be attributed to one of four main causes: Extra-cardiac stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system (inappropriate stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system, particularly the vagus nerve, (which innervates the heart), can be caused by anxiety and stress due to acute or chronic elevations in glucocorticoids and catecholamines. Gastrointestinal distress such as bloating or indigestion, along with muscular imbalances and poor posture, can also irritate the vagus nerve causing palpitations) Sympathetic overdrive (panic disorders, low blood sugar, hypoxia, antihistamines (i.e. levocetirizine), low red blood cell count, heart failure, mitral valve prolapse).[4] Hyperdynamic circulation (valvular incompetence, thyrotoxicosis, hypercapnia, high body temperature, low red blood cell count, pregnancy). Abnormal heart rhythms (ectopic beat, premature atrial contraction, junctional escape beat, premature ventricular contraction, atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia, ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, heart block). Anxiety and stress Anxiety and stress elevate the body's level of cortisol and adrenaline, which in turn can interfere with the normal functioning of the parasympathetic nervous system resulting in overstimulation of the vagus nerve.[5] Vagus nerve induced palpitation is felt as a thud, a hollow fluttery sensation, or a skipped beat, depending on at what point during the heart's normal rhythm the vagus nerve fires. In many cases, the anxiety and panic of experiencing palpitations causes a sufferer to experience further anxiety and increased vagus nerve stimulation. The link between anxiety and palpitation may also explain why many panic attacks involve an impending sense of cardiac arrest. Similarly, physical and mental stress may contribute to the occurrence of palpitation, possibly due to the depletion of certain micronutrients involved in maintaining healthy psychological and physiological function.[6] Gastrointestinal bloating, indigestion and hiccups have also been associated with overstimulation of the vagus nerve causing palpitations, due to branches of the vagus nerve innervating the GI tract, diaphragm, and lungs. How much is your body temperature? And what is your heart rate? With raised temperature, its very normal to have raised the heart beat. Since when r you having this? What are other symptoms that you are experiencing? By doing what like walking, exertion, eating or empty stomach- it increases or decreases in intensity. For how much time it remains? How is your appetite? Are you constipated or having loose stools? Is there stiffness also? I need to know more to be able to make a diagnosis it can be gas. Follow this 1. Don't take tea empty stomach. Eat something like a banana (if you are not diabetic) or any seasonal fruit or soaked almonds and a glass of water first thing in the morning (within 10 mins of waking up). No only biscuits or rusk will not do. 2. Don't overeat 3. Take your breakfast every day. Don't skip it. You should eat whatever your mother or grandparent eat in bfast. I mean to say whatever is your traditional food. If Punjabi eat paratha, if belongs to south then take idli/ dosa etc. 4. Have light meals every 2 hours (in addition to your breakfast, lunch n dinner) e.g. Nariyal paani, chaach, a handful of dry fruits, a handful of peanuts, any fresh n seasonal fruit (eat whole fruit not juice), a cup of curd/milk etc 5. Take simple food like rice n dal in dinner. Finish your dinner at least 2 hours before going to sleep. 6. Maintain active life style7. Avoid fast foods, spicy n fried foods, carbonated beverages 8. Take a lot of green vegetables n fruit. 9. Drink lot of water.10. Everyday preferably sleep on same time exercise in the form of yoga, cycling, swimming, gym etc. For more details, you can consult me.

Hi always discuss with your doctor whom you want to deliver the baby all the doubts you have to have a smooth pregnancy. Be happy. Eat healthy and take your vitamins. Do not take any medicines without doctors advice. Do not strain urself in case of vomittng or bleeding or constipation or pain in the abdomen. Visit your doctor immediately.

Dear lybrate-user, Please try to stop smoking at the earliest. It has many health benefits in the long run. When you stop suddenly, you may get withdrawal symptoms like restlessness, irritability, lack of concentration, increased hunger, sleep disturbance, headache, impatience, anxiety, depression, etc. If you have them please don’t get back to smoking, take nicotine gum or lozenge or patch. They are available in all medical shops. You don’t need a prescription from doctors. Use 2 mg gum if you smoke less than 25 cigarettes/day. Use 4 mg gum if you smoke more than 25 cigarettes/day. First 6 weeks, use 1 gum every 1 – 2 hours. Reduce it in week 7 – 9 to one gum every 2 – 4 hours. In week 10 – 12, reduce it further to 1 gum every 4 -8 hours. By 3 months, you will be able to stop both cigarettes and gum fully without any withdrawal symptoms. Please feel confident that you can do it and give yourself some gift for doing it like vacation or books or new mobile. Smoking is a chronic relapsing condition like diabetes and B.P. I want to know about these issue I am going through, its related to my left chest or may be heart. Usually I have a normal heartbeat, but due to anxiety which I have, I get palpitations, but now it have reduced. Apart from that sometimes for the past few months, I do feel a heaviness on my left chest, something like stiffness, but it have never bothered me to extreme, it goes away and again it comes back. I never have felt pain, but I had gastric issues as a result occasionally I do feel prickly shooting pain in lower part of my heart. My heart palpitations reads 78-85. I am not a gym guy but I do walk and does some asanas. I am concern about this sudden stiffness or a sense of heaviness in my heart ,never I feel pain, but I wanna be sure is it serious issue?

My mother is 82 years old and is suffering from supra ventricular tachycardia. She is taking 1 tab calaptin 120 mg SR and 1 tab calaptin 40 mg daily. She is also a patient of COPD. She takes two inhaler (Tiova and Formoflo 250 2 puffs twice daily). Recently she is always feeling nauseated along with regurgitation. When she vomits bile like liquids comes out without any food particles. Appetite is not there and feeling weak. Please suggest something to get rid of this problem.

I have low BP and palpitation. Feeling nausea & weakness as well. I had been taking liquids, glucose enerzal for this but so far nothing worked. I also have gall stones. Systolic: 104 Diastolic: 64.
