Dear serious back problems are those which affect the spinal cord and nerve roots. You will have problems with radiating pain down the legs and if the nerve roots are compressed you can also have numbness. The more compression and you can also have weakness. There are lot of conditions which can lead to this ranging from discitis, disc prolapse, infections of the spine, seronegative inflammatory conditions, tumours, stenosis, listhesis etc. You will need to undergo blood tests and initially plain xrays before going for special blood tests and higher radiological investigation.
