Recollecting dreams is sign of not a complete sleep cycle. Earlier when he used to consume spicy/oily food because of gastritis he was awakening in mid of sleep cycle and so recollection of dreams. Sleeping, Gastritis is a vicious cycle one leads to another and vice versa. He needs to take proper care of food, also smoking leads to gastritis so better to quit or at least reduce consumption. Focus on finding cause of Gastritis (Acidity) and its treatment, which by far will solve most of his complaints.

Patient who is smoking, consuming oily stuffs is more prone for acidity and gaseous dyspepsia (tobaco dyspepsia), such acidic refluxes and gas formation is more at bed time when patient is recumbent. For absurd dreams ,probably your father may have been suffering from mild insomnia, he lacks deep sleep (slumber phase) ,mostly restless sleep (REM or rapid eye movement phase) is accompanied with vivid dreams which may be pleasant or unpleasant. Sometimes shallow respiration (sleep apnoea) is also heralded with restless sleep and nightmares, this may have to do with various heart problems also. To have proper deep sleep, check with qualified doctor, avoid smoking, reduce intake of any stimulants .eat light specially dinner 2 hours before getting into bed. Certain informations such as addictions, concurrent illness, snoring, drug history, occupational involvement etc will guide your doctor to better solution. Good luck.
