Your father has age related degenerative changes in cervical spine. In addition he has protrusion of intervertebral disc (that is disc between two Vertebra). The disc bulge is causing nerve compression which is serious. Your father should take a trial of conservative treatment which includes physiotherapy and medicines. If the symptoms progress or worsen: 1. A trial of epidural steroid injections can be taken by a pain specialist. In this procedure, drug mixture consisting of steroid and local anesthetic is injected in epidural space around the nerve roots. This will decrease the nerve inflammation from disc compression. This gives good pain relief and opportunity for physiotherapy. 2. If your father develops weakness of hands/legs or numbness of hands or shoulder or difficulty in breathing, he will need urgent surgery like decompression.
