Pain during defecation is not normal & regular feature, but still if one may avoid constipation, hard stools it may help, regular bowel movement at appropriate time, using vegetables ,fruits and roughage in diet, minimum non veg or high protein/fat diet, one must be relaxed and maintain habit of exerting minimum exertion during defecation. All these measures helps in avoiding injury to anal mucosa/or engorged rectal veins. Pain during defecation is a typical sign seen in common conditions like fissures ,overt /internal piles ,anorectal spasms ,you age, medication taken, medical history like HTN or diabetes or other operative history, portal hypertension (seen in advanced liver disorders) shall give the clue to your condition. If still it persists move to qualified doctor or anorectal /gastroenterologists. Good luck.
