Thank you for the query. Fatty liver can arise due alcohol intake, increased triglyceride level and diabetes mellitus. Intake of some drugs may also cause it. Dietary modifications include restriction of refined carbohydrates (white bread, instant noodles, pasta, fast food etc) and avoidance of carbonated beverages. Saturated fat (ghee, butter) intake must be restricted to less than 10% of energy intake per day. If he is overweight, weight loss may help (however, sudden weight loss may be detrimental). Some investigations may be done like Lipid profile (as increased triglyceride levels are a common association), blood sugar profile (diabetes must be ruled out in any fatty liver) and liver function test (to check the status of the liver). The early stages of fatty liver are usually reversible with dietary control and exercise. However, if ignored in the early phases, it may lead to steatohepatitis, which may in turn lead to chronic liver disease. No definite drug therapy are yet available for fatty liver, though a number of medications are under trial. Regards.
