Dear lybrate user...Depression is a state in which the person's mind has Negative Attribution Style for everything around him, whether good or bad. Thus even if good events or happy events happen in a person's life like a promotion, will give only a momentary happiness and that too not to the appropriate extent. Any non bothersome thing will make him highly irritable and any negative event will make him sad to a much greater extent than normally he should be. The reason it happens is that the neurotransmitters particularly Serotonin and others are low in Depression and thus we just look with a negative perspective towards everything. Your second question is about changing the thought process of a person. Yes it is possible and there are therapies like Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) based on it. When a person is depressed his thinking perspective is just to have negative attribution and thus he doesnt look at the other possibilities as the reason for the things happening around him. What we do in CBT is assist the person in thinking about an event in various other possibilities which ultimately helps him in reduction of his negative emotions and changing his thoughts. But as I told if It is a major depressive episode, only just CBT therapy is not sufficient and giving medications is warranted. I hope I clarified most of your doubts.
