Lybrate-user, if there is family history of hypothyroidism, it may occur in the offspring also. There is no specific method to avoid it from developing. However, using iodinated salt regularly so as to prevent deficiency of iodine leading to development of hypothyroidism, is one method. Secondly it is better to avoid soy beans, soy containing foods, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, mustard, peanuts and coffee. Plus use whole grain flour for making roti and chapati, avoid maida and products made out of it. Plus use low fat milk products and eggs. Plus exercise regularly to maintain normal weight. If sub clinical hypothyroidism develops then also above measures hold good. Hypothyroidism being a thyroxine deficiency disorder, there is no cure, it can only be controlled when it does occur. If it occurs then treatment is for lifetime. Thanks.
