Bad smell is called halitosis. The main causes of bad breath are systemic and localized. If there is persistent halitosis yo need to rule out infection in your throat or stomach. And if its local than there could be pocket or swelling in gums or infection in tooth. Regular use of mouth wash and regular intake of water at short intervals also prevent bad brath.
