In kidney transplantation whether the damaged kidney is removed or not? And where is the new kidney situated in this procedure of kidney transplantation?

The damaged kidney is not routinely removed. However, if it has got infection, tumour, obstruction, large stones, or if it is creating problems like protein loss, occupying a lot of space, causing hypertension etc then it is removed. The transplanted kidney is usually placed in right or left lower abdomen.
