Diabetes mellitus does affect retina, it can be a very serious complication and it may also lead to even blindness. Retinopathy is of two types non proliferative retinopathy and proliferative retinopathy and macular edema. These conditions if detected well in advance, can be controlled and serious consequences can be prevented. First and foremost thing of importance it achieve a strict blood sugar control, because hyperglycemia leads to retinal problems.
