Hello lybrate-user. Sorry about your mother's eye problem. Macular degeneration has many causes associated with it. Let me enumerate them in brief: (1) age related macular degeneration. It tends to occur in certain people with progressing age. This is usually not totally hereditary. It is more so determined by age and many other factors like consumption of tobacco, etc. Though, there is an element of heredity associated with it, it is not totally hereditary. (2) heredomacular degeneration: as the name suggests, it is hereditary in nature and tends to run in families. It may vary in severity. (3) macular degeneration due to exposure to ultraviolet light, infrared light, etc. There are various other causes as well. It would be a good idea to ask your retina specialist in person regarding the type of degeneration that your mother is suffering from. That would help to predict whether you are at an increased risk or not. Hope my suggestions helped you.
