Hello sir. I want to ask that. I am not able to hear from my left ear it is completely damaged as the listening nerve is damaged. My left ear is good. But it also started to get damage. My ear drum starts melting. It is as such that it can stuck with brain too if the bone between brain and war drum gets melted. Please suggest whether I can undergo an operation to change my ear drum. But doctor suggest me that it can either increase the hearing ability or it can also damage the present hearing power. What should I do?

Hello, if you have decreased hearing and ear discharge for more than 3 months, it's a condition called chronic otitis media. One of the complications of this condition is meningitis, brain abscess if there's erosion of the bony cover between ear and brain. Untreated com it has every chance of occurring. When ear discharge occurs for considerable time the ear bones responsible for hearing gets da, aged and small pockets of infection gets inside these bones. During surgery all affected tissues and bone as far as possible need to be removed. Due to this there's a chance of decrease in hearing postoperative ly. Also as the disease and surgery both has a risk of damaging the nerves, there's little chance of sensorieural damage. But you have to remember the surgery is first done to prevent very serious complications from developing including involvement of brain, facial palsy etc. Hearing reconstruction can be done at the same sitting or as a second stage survey once the ear heals and you are a good candidate for reconstruction. Either treatment or regular followup is very important. The more the delay higher the risk and chances of complicated developing. Have you done a pta, tympanum try, hrct temporal bone. If you share the reports I can help you better. Keep your optimism and all will be on. Hope this helps.
