Hi lybrate-user. It is important to find out underlying cause. Causes of cough are many like. Cold, pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis. Whooping cough. Post nasal drip. Allergy. Asthma copd smoking. Laryngitis. Bronchiectasis. Aspirations. Medication like ace inhibitors for bp. Interstitial lung disease. Heart failure. Rarely lung cancer. To findout underlying cause sputum culture, ekg, lung function test, xray of chest and sinuses are done. Dry cough may be relieved by 1. Demulcents that treat dry cough by coating and soothing pharynx and relieve irritation that triggers dry cough. Cough syrup containing sucrose and glycerol. 2. Honey with warm water and lemon. 3. Steam inhalation. 4. Gargling with warm salty water. 5. Cough suppressant containing dextromethorpan or codeine or dihydrocodeine. 6. Sucking lozenges.
