Your friend might be having rotator cuff impingement at shoulder. This can occur in sports persons with overhead use of arm as occurs in badminton. Ask him to stop playing when it's painful. Apply cold pack over the shoulder and topical analgesic creams. He can take simple analgesics with anti inflammatory effect available over the counter. Once pain is decreased he should undergo isometric shoulder exercises. If problem is not relieved he might have to undergo ultrasound therapy of shoulder muscles. Steroid injections or surgery are done at last stage. Hope this helps.
